to be honest, it is a pretty mixed bag from looking at the twitter feed from OSU research.

lots of waste here. some good for sure, but lots of waste. all of it should have been private research. the public should not fund any research whatsoever, only private business and individuals. they can provide private grants and funds to universities to do research still, but the government should stay out of this. it looks like a giant waste of cash for the most part.

more than 50% of the tweets on OSU research seem to be a giant waste of money honestly.

Again, this research is probably mostly funded by endowments or grants. Generally the news release for each research program will mention the funding source (i.e., This study was funded by a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar grant, or Piermarini?s research is funded by a $1.4 million grant from the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health?s "New Insecticides for Malaria Control" program, which is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation., etc)

You can look at p.65 to see where the state money (which covers only ~10% of budget) is going on Columbus campus:

I can think of a practical need, such as improved supply and logistics modelling, thus lower costs, for pharma distribution or improved training and diagnostic performance for virtually every one of those research projects.

and if there is an actual need for that information, a business has already done his market research.

lots of soft science gender and race studies in there that don't need funded at all on my dime. private dimes, go for it.

still no problem at all with private research gifts to universities, only public financed.

good links again BayBuck, i will go over them here after dinner.

quick read from the PDF shows the university only spent $319,000 of its funds on research, which is essentially nothing. the rest would have had to come from other private and public sources. as a university we should take all the money we can, but as a public i still have a problem with funding any research on the public dime as it is generally not as efficient as a private individual or business would be.

again, well managed. maybe OSU should run the nation too. . . .

The Manhattan project. The Gemini and Apollo programs. Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. Fermilab. Argonne National Lab. Los Alamos. 90% of the funded Cancer Research in America. The Polio vaccine. 99% of the aeronautical/astronautical research funded in America since WWII. Meteorological/ Weather Forecasting.

All giant wastes of cash for the most part.

And here's the education part. Research is not an expense to Ohio State. It's externally funded..........MOSTLY BY PRIVATE BUSINESS. There's two major funding sources for academic research at American universities: the federal government and private business. Ohio State last ranked 9th for the total amount of research they did. They ranked in the 20s for federally funded research, yet in the top 5 for privately funded research, which means that that the private sector you put on such a pedestal of worship must like something that Ohio State is doing. It's why Shell Oil not only funds a ton of research in our chemisty and chemical engineering departments but also donates millions of dollars to the endowment to ensure that those labs and the professors running them are world class.

And therein lies the multiplier effect of which Cinci spoke. Those 900 million dollars in EXTERNALLY FUNDED research dollars have a massive economic impact on Columbus and the state of Ohio that dwarfs the economic impact that the athletic department has. Do you think it's a fucking coincidence that the Big Ten just invited Johns Hopkins (the largest research university in the entire world) to be the very first and only associate Big Ten member?

Just got a personal letter back from President E. Gordon Gee thanking me for thanking him on his time as president. Long story short but YES, it was from him...the man is simply amazing. I will just try to enjoy the rest of his time and hope our future president can be half the success he was.

Soon-to-be President Emeritus Gee:

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee's retirement July 1 may bring changes to the university administration, but Gee will still be calling Columbus home.

His contract with the university states should Gee choose to retire before the end of his term, which was due to last at least ten years beginning in 2007, he will be granted "the permanent status of President Emeritus, with an appropriate stipend, secretary and office for a period of five years."
The details of Gee's exit package have not been finalized yet, OSU spokeswoman Gayle Saunders said in a Tuesday email.

Gee's supplemental executive retirement agreement indicates there has been about $2.33 million placed in his retirement account since June 2009, and that Gee's account was due to receive a credit of $641,301 on June 30.

Gee's contract says he has also been granted tenure at the OSU Moritz College of Law and the College of Education and Human Ecology.

Gee will be teaching at Moritz and writing books after a break of about a year, he said in remarks at his last summer tour's final stop in Kent, Ohio, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

I don't care what everybody else says about Gee. He gave a rousing speech, which mentioned the "sexy ladies of Gangnam style", and got Jack Hannah as the chief guest when I graduated last year. He was the one to give me my degree. Will always have fond memories of him. Thank you President Gee!

Thread probably needs to be moved.

Inside Gee's head: Can't believe I'm holding this faygo shirt...or standing next to this crackhead with his purple drank bowtie. Smile. SUHMAAILE!!! Gotta make it out of this crack-house alive...how the fuck did I get here in the first place? Oh that's right, he said he was hosting a bowtie connoisseurs club meet. Sneaky bastard.

What a fucking asshole. This juggalo clown was the one who had all the tact and class to give his "multiple flagships" interview on the day Gee decided to step down.

Mark my words, this smug little fuck is trouble. Given half a chance, he will pee on our rug.
