E. Gordon Gee (President West Virginia U.)

In the total scheme of things, Gee's performance in relation to athletics is a very small part of his job. He has done really good things for Ohio State elsewhere. Right now, he needs to be positive and to avoid saying anything in public about Smith's performance. Behind closed doors, another script may be playing.

A lot of people I've talked to think President Gee should be sent packing, along with Gene Smith. President Gee is beloved by the students here but that seems to be changing. No question he has done a lot of good things here. Ohio State has grown leaps and bounds as an undergraduate institution under his watch and I've heard his impact on the university endowement is huge. I just wonder what the higher-ups are thinking. I wouldn't lose sleep whether he stays or moves on, but I am shocked by his apparent willingness to hitch his wagon to Gene. Could be a bad move.

A lot of people are losing their minds over the one-year bowl ban. It's a small part of a big picture, but that perspective has been lost for the moment.

The scab has been ripped off again. This was supposed to be Gene's one saving grace, his inside connections with the NCAA, when in fact it was arguably his biggest negative, causing even more fallout.

As for Gee, he has chosen to hitch his wagon to Gene at every turn. That isn't the fault of students and alumni, nor are his embarrassing press comments. Did Tressel fire him yet?

It's pretty clear that he needs to create some distance... or at least hire a Pam to make sure his first instinct isn't the line the public actually hears.

I would hope that the higher ups are a hell of a lot smarter than the troglodytes who think a university president should be fired over football.

Gee was personally brought back by Les Wexner. He's not going anywhere.

That being said, I still cringe at the utterly tone deaf, "I hope he doesn't fire me" comment. He needs to distance himself from the athletic department.

Personally, I don't think he's protecting GS. GS wasn't his hire in the first place. Wheels will move a lot slower on this matter than most would like, but I think they are moving.

Gee is a phenomenal president and I want him here as long as he will stay. There might be a full fledged riot if he were fired...all the students love him. Truly the most influential and persuasive person in the state...what he got for higher education in this budget cycle was unbelievable. In any event, Gee should go nowhere, although he should step back from the athletic program some.

Abso--f8cking--lutely. The man has every legislator, of both parties, on speed dial. He's one of the Governor's closest and most trusted advisers. The Fredo presidents quake, quiver and offer to blacken his boots like a gaggle of Cockney urchins in a Dickens novel when he enters the room. He has relationships with the state's top corporations and foundations that go back two decades.

By all means, let's whack him because the AD that he inherited from the previous president is a colossal boob.

Gee is a fantastic university president who simply needs to shut his mouth when it comes to this entire situation. Like it or not, his comments on the athletics department are the ones that get the most publicity and he has consistently come off looking like a boob. He's something of a punchline at this point because of his quips...

Calls for his dismissal are pretty silly, but somebody needs to issue a gag order on any further comments from him on this fiasco...

Dear Friends
:

gee-g.jpg

The New Year approaches, bringing many opportunities for The Ohio State University to extend knowledge to all corners of the world. This is only possible because of the immense talents of our students, the creative work of our faculty, and the generous support of our alumni and friends. I am tremendously grateful for the efforts of so many on behalf of this University.

This year, the University received the largest philanthropic gift in history from alumnus and Board of Trustees Chair Leslie Wexner. His poignant message - "But for Ohio State, I would have never been able to go to college" - reminds us of the unparalleled power of education to change lives. I invite you, if you have not done so, to take a few moments to share what Ohio State means to you.
Earlier this month, I had the honor of presiding over my 46th commencement at Ohio State, and I will say there are few things that make me as proud as our remarkable students. Here are a few other highlights from 2011 that surely deserve mention:

  • A steady rise in our ranking among America's top colleges
  • Our academic Medical Center named among the nation's top 10
  • Twenty faculty - the most of any university - elected as Fellows of the American Association of the Advancement of Science
  • Our international enrollment reaching top-10 status
  • A record year in fundraising, both in amount raised and number of donors
I look forward to building upon these and other successes in the coming year. Together, we will continue to write the great stories of this University. Thank you for your efforts and firm friendship : through Summer's heat or Winter's cold. And know of my best wishes for a fabulous 2012.
Sincerely,
Gee-Signature.gif

E. Gordon Gee
President, The Ohio State University

Luke Fickell didn?t get to keep the job as Ohio State?s football coach that he had held since Jim Tressel?s forced resignation on Memorial Day. But university president E. Gordon Gee helped to ensure that Fickell didn?t get away.

Fickell will be co-defensive coordinator on new coach Urban Meyer?s staff, but he also was considered for the coaching job at the University of Pittsburgh, which eventually hired Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst.

?I?m so delighted that Luke Fickell is staying. I took him out to dinner a week ago to re-recruit him when Pittsburgh was trying to recruit him,? Gee said in an interview this week.

He added that Fickell was a ?young coach who performed bravely. ... I think he is a wonderful asset. I think we didn?t have the season that people expected. But we?re still playing in a very good bowl game, and I have every expectation that we will have a great season next year.?
Ohio State?s ticket sales for the Gator Bowl have been slow, but Gee said, ?There will always be great interest in Ohio State football. I think that all the turmoil that we have had this year has had an impact on ticket sales.?

They actually posted this as a story on the CBS college football page.

Ohio State president Gee slips up again, makes mild ethnic comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The president of Ohio State stopped himself in the middle of a question-and-answer session and acknowledged he slipped up with a mild ethnic comment.
Gordon Gee, in a speech in downtown Columbus on Wednesday, likened the job of trying to coordinate 18 separate Ohio State divisions to the Polish army.

Gee, who is known for his verbal slip-ups, immediately said he did it again - and that now he'll be raising money for the Polish army.

Gee got in trouble last year for saying Ohio State's football schedule didn't include teams of the caliber of the "Little Sisters of the Poor."And several years ago, he called the Ohio governor a dummy out of frustration over higher education funding.
