E. Gordon Gee (President West Virginia U.)

This is why I have so much respect for the administration and staff at TCU. They didn't respond at all to the Gee comments.

And rather than fuss about it and stomp their feet - they quietly did something about it. Sure, nobody would say the Big East is an amazing conference, but its an AQ and there is something to be said for that.

TCU handled their business the right way, all while quietly trying to better themselves. I appreciate that.

Actually, their president made an anywhere; anytime boast completely oblivious to the fact that we had offered them the opening game in 2009, but they backed out because they didn't want to start the season with away games at big time opponents as they had done with in 07 and 08 with Texas and LSU.

Rep for the correction ORD. My mistake and thanks for putting it in proper context.

I will say that Nevada is a legit top 15 team this year--probably a 2-3 loss Big Ten team. While I think their coach was being needlessly foolish with his remarks about Ohio State losing to both Nevada and truck driver u, he's entitled to his opinion.

What else would he say at that moment? Yeah, Ohio State would kick our asses and Boise's too? That would totally diminish what his players had just done on national TV. His comments were the smartest thing he could say - for his players - at the time. It was their moment, and he wasn't about to take it away from them.

I wouldn't assume that in an honest moment with himself he necessarily believes it. Maybe, but I'm not so sure. He's been in the game for a long time.

Q&A, OSU PRESIDENT E. GORDON GEE
Bucks' biggest booster

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

In the coming year, Ohio State University will be lobbying for state higher-education funding - and then dealing with however Gov.-elect John Kasich deals with the looming state budget deficit. At the same time, OSU will be working on all aspects of its economic-development mission, including producing skilled graduates, innovations that can be commercialized and a $1 billion expansion of the Medical Center.

President E. Gordon Gee, who returned to Ohio State in 2007, presides over all of it. He sat down with The Dispatch last week for a wide-ranging interview.

Q: How concerned are you about the state higher-education budget? How would you describe your relationship with Gov.-elect Kasich?

A: I think we all realize that we have a budget hole to fill. I think that this university is doing everything to make certain it is fulfilling its obligations to the people of the state in terms of being prudent in use of its resources. And also, of course, we are working very hard to make the case, which I believe that most people understand, that Ohio State and higher education are the economic engines that will drive the state. One thing I know about John Kasich is not only that he is a very smart man, but he also is a guy who believes in making tough decisions and making good investment strategies. My relationship with the governor-elect goes back 20 years. And so we have had a long relationship. We're both very strong personalities, so ... we really enjoy each other when we are together. I admire him. I think he's a person that wants to do good things. And I have every expectation that he is going to be an excellent governor.

Q: What do you expect to happen with tuition? If Ohio State decides a price increase is needed, would you apply any kind of self-imposed limit?

A: Oh yeah, we're not about gouging anyone. ... I'm a low-tuition guy. But obviously we have to look at a variety of sources to make certain that we meet the needs of the university and the needs of our students.

OSU president: Buckeyes should be worried about Brady Hoke

David Shepardson / The Detroit News

Detroit? Ohio State University president Gordon Gee endorsed the hiring of Michigan's new football coach Brady Hoke, saying Buckeyes should be nervous.
"They've hired a fine new coach. This guy's a builder. He's going to do great," Gee told The Detroit News as he toured the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. "If you're an Ohio State fan, you fear him."
He noted that when he was first OSU president, the school didn't do well against Michigan. "During my first tenure, I was in 1-5-1 against Michigan, so we've had a good run. I think there will always be a great rivalry," Gee said.
Still, Gee is very happy with his football coach ? and OSU's success. "Jim Tressel is the best coach in America," Gee said.
Gee was in town with new Ohio Gov. John Kasich to meet with automakers and tout Ohio's benefits for economic development.

Please stop talking about football....the only three quotes I know of about football from him are.... calling a tie "the greatest victory in Ohio State history"....Little sisters of the poor and we should fear someone...stop just run the university

C'mon, guys. He was on their home turf and being diplomatic...probably overcompensating after the "little sisters of the poor" uproar. There's no slight against Tressel here.

The only thing I take away from the article is that Gee is one of Kasich's top advisors and, for the first time since the 50s, Ohio is going to have a Republican Governor who works for Ohio State University and not against it.

Edited to mention that I'm probably being a little unfair to Taft here.

Atop the Chronicle list for the third consecutive year is E. Gordon Gee, president of Ohio State University, with compensation of $1.3 million. Including deferred compensation and other perks, the total cost of his employment last year was $1.8 million.
Dr. Gee's pay included a bonus of nearly $300,000 that he gives to scholarship funds. Alex Shumate, a member of the OSU board of trustees, said in a statement, "In President Gee, we have a transformational leader who understands where we have been, where we are, and where we still need to go."

Dr. Gee is the only administrator on the Chronicle list paid more than $1 million annually. One factor behind the size of his paycheck is that he came to OSU from Vanderbilt University, a private institution. Pay generally is higher at such universities. Last November, the Chronicle reported that 30 private-college presidents had earned $1 million or more in 2008.

President E. Gordon Gee addresses the media in a press conference on March 8.

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee doesn't take himself seriously.

As a result, he's made comments about football that have placed him under scrutiny ? remarks that he's later regretted.

Gee told The Lantern editorial board on Wednesday that he regrets making a statement at a March 8 press conference in which football coach Jim Tressel apologized for withholding information vital to an NCAA investigation.

When asked at the press conference if any thought had been given to firing Tressel, Gee replied, with a chuckle, "I hope he doesn't fire me."

The sarcastic statement overshadowed the meandering speech Tressel offered minutes earlier.

"I sometimes need to extricate my foot from my mouth," Gee told The Lantern editorial board. "I admit that. But I have been that way for 30 years."
