Dylan Raiola (QB Nebraska)

This signing was so far in the future, that I don’t have much emotion over this decomittment. It sucks because he was rated so high, and is talented. But there will be other names that emerge, and I worry about Ryan Day recruiting QBs as much as I’d worry about Hartline with WRs. And tbh, I really like Devin Brown, and I really like what Kienholz may be able to do in this offense.

And to be perfectly honest, as long as the Portal is around, I don’t care if the #1 recruit de commits at whatever position. He can be replaced by a kid who actually produced at the college level, against much more difficult competition than the 5star from HS. I pose this question, the #1 QB recruit in 2023 is Arch Manning, if you were to pick, would you rather have him starting for you and not knowing how he’ll perform at the college level. Or say,Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina who has put up stellar stats against actual collegiate football players. You may only have him for 1-2yrs(not sure of his eligibility), and Manning for 3-4, but it’s no different than OSU getting Fields, and losing Martell. At the time, many were up in arms over Martell leaving, and OSU didn’t get a very highly ranked QB, but OSU got Justin Fields. Who kept the program elite and bridged the gap to CJ Stroud.
This probably hurt with the recruitment of Jayden Davis, who is now favored to TTUN. Davis is probably the better fit for OSU, and this waste of time probably the part that hurts the most.

I haven’t read anything much on his decommittment, but personally I think I would rather him decommitt than hit the transfer portal in a year.

If the coaching staff believes in McCord/Brown, and they believe in the kid from South Dakota, then I feel like we will be just fine. Give McCord/Briwn 2 years, then bring in the next kid. Having a full cupboard is a great feeling, but it’s not 2008. Stocked positions means early and often transfers (see: WRs, QBs, linemen, etc) in today’s college football.

We did fine without Burrow, Tate, and Ewers. I believe in Ohio State’s skill development given our track record. Maybe I’m alone in that feeling - I’m good with it.

Huge loss at the moment, but point well taken that there's plenty of time to get a great one in this class or maybe get someone in the portal, or both. My biggest concern is any effect on the class with him gone if we don't get another QB in this class somewhat soon. That can be an issue not having a QB help leading recruiting early on. We'll be fine, but I'm not going to pretend this doesn't hurt.

Do recruiting rankings even matter anymore with NIL? Does anybody care that a kid who is *projected* to be the best player coming out of high school is having a second thought about where he wants to go to go redshirt 2 years from now? Aren't programs better off waiting to see who can actually play at this level?

I realize, as well, that this impacts how OSU stands with other recruits. And I'd ask the same questions about them.

I don't think there's anything to see here. Good luck to Dylan.

Ewers proved that.Loyakty is the oath military members take. Athletes maybe never.

Yeah, I'm with you, but if i take a step back, I'm not sure we can question or make a determination of an athlete's loyalty, either.

There's an enormous difference, though, in terms of consequences, eh?

Athletes don't get taken away to jail if they decide that they'd rather not deploy.

Meaning this: that the parallel doesn't apply, because even though we're still talking about 16/17 year olds, the standard is different in a way.

No one is asking them to make an oath..recruiting athletes is different now for sure but we probably remember the past more romantically than it was.

I just watched Dan Orlovsky on the Dan Patrick Show talking about if he had to choose a place to go if he were a top QB, that he'd choose Ohio State. When Patrick asked him why, Dan said he know Dominic Raiola and then mentioned Dylan. Mentioned his commitment to OSU and was gushing about both the school and the player. Strange to see this decommit like a day after.

Anyways, best of luck to the kid.

I did a little research. With the exception of Matthew Baldwin (we were pretty screwed how late Emory Jones decommitted from us), our hit rate on QB's who commit late in the recruiting calendar has been excellent (final commitments closer to signing day in bold). Also, shout out to Kyle McCord for sticking it out... looks like he could be rewarded next year

'16 -- Commit/decommit Tristen Wallace (April-Dec), signed Dwayne Haskins (committed in Jan)
'17 -- Commit/decommit Danny Clark (Dec '13-Sept '16), signed Tate Martell (committed in June)
'18 -- Commit/decommit Emory Jones (Apr '16-Dec '17), signed Matthew Baldwin (committed in Dec)
'19 -- Commit/decommit D'wan Mathis (June-Dec), signed transfer Justin Fields (post bowl games)
'20 -- Signed Jack Miller (committed in July) & CJ Stroud (committed in Dec)
'21 -- Signed Kyle McCord (committed in April) & Quinn Ewers (reclassified from '22 to '21, committed in Nov)
'22 -- Signed Devin Brown (committed in Dec after Ewers reclassified)
'23 -- Commit/decommit Brock Glen (July-Nov), have current commitment from Lincoln Kienholz (Dec)
'24 -- Commit/decommit Dylan Raiola (May '22-Dec '22)

It sucks losing Dylan. But he didn't do us dirty like Emory Jones did and wait until late to cut bait. We've got plenty of time to do our scouting, research, and due diligence to find the right guy for the job, whether that commitment be April-July of next year or Nov-Dec of next year

Recruiting rankings don't matter anymore because of the Portal, not NIL
