Duane Long (Blog Discussion)

I like Duane because he will keep a balance between praise and criticism. He will speak honestly on both ends of that spectrum without bashing or without drinking the Kool-Aid. When it comes to player evaluations, he divulges as much as he can...sometimes people need to read between the lines though. I know Duane has to sit on plenty of info just like most of the other 'insiders' However, he knows what he is talking about...and is not afraid to go out on the limb occasionally. When that limb fails, too often posters want to point it out as a sign of incompetence when in reality, its just a part of the crapshoot. A few years ago, I got in some heated discussion about Ben Martin...I said he was a 3 and done talent and I still believe that. However, after a few other factors early in his career, Ben has to have a big year to make my prediction come true. If not, am I suddenly an idiot or did things just not work out the way we thought they would?

There certainly is a fine line for guys in his position, no doubt. Especially when it's easy for readers to point out every mistake or wrong statement posted. Heck, I guess I was even guilty of that last part.

Without getting too much off topic, how is Ben Martin doing at UT? Haven't heard too much noise, but I admittedly wasn't paying too much attention...

if you can't accurately predict how an 18-year-old will react to college living and the pressures of big time college football over a period of three to five years every single time than you are an idiot in my book

to be fair though, I give bonus points for making an accurate prediction by their sophomore year in high school

Love to read Duane's stuff, however that guy needs to proof read his blogs before he posts them.

Does anybody else have trouble navigating on his DL's site? Sometimes I can't even get to it because it is down or something

I agree with the comment that Duane is a straight shooter. When he offers an inside scope, even if it happens to be really negative, you can usually bet on it being true. The problem is that sometimes he is overly dramatic, case in point, his recent commentaries on Carlos Hyde. How do you go from naming someone a starter over established players like Boom to not sure if that person is not good enough anymore to be on the team? Of course there are academic concerns, but if DL has half the information that the coaches do, he would probably realize that a lot of kids have concerns and that is something you need to deal with. Somewhat related is his criticism of Keith Wells. As we all know, Wells has not seen as much pt as some expected him to, but that's mostly because we are so stacked at DE. I suppose you can always point to effort while figuring out why someone isn't on the two deep, but that can be said for almost every player who's not on the two deep.

I really have nothing against Duane in talent evaluation other than his habit of ranking MAC level Ohio QBs in the top five. Overall he offers some interesting insights.

Again, that one falls under info that is not for the boards...for example, here is another example from a few years ago. A very promising player got to Columbus and almost instantly fell in love with the sister of a teammate. His mind went from football to well...college life. His promising career went down the drain and he left school. I hope Keith has learned his lesson...but in this case, don't shoot the messenger for giving you as much of the story as possible without completely laying the kids' life out on the internet.

:slappy:The succubus syndrome....

But that's my point...do we really want to get into any details about why a third stringer is not seeing more pt? It'd be one thing to know why Terrelle Pryor weren't out on the first series against SC, but quite another to know why a third stringer didn't see mop up duty in the fourth quarter. I suppose there's always a good reason why coaches are benching kids who are not on the two deep.

I've definitely been a Duane Long fan since I started going to Bucknuts back around 2001/2002. He's had some misses, but overall I've been pretty impressed with his record, especially considering how hit or miss evaluating talent can be. If there is anything I would criticize Duane on, it's that he may get slightly carried away in either direction, positive and negative.

I hope Duane makes it with his latest site, he has been a staple for years.:)

Kind of basing this on what grad said. I think some people don't get that there are a lot of distractions for these players and to be able to stay away from these distractions and focus on getting better is a big part of who is successful and who isn't. Sometimes a player has the talent to be a great player but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes. It's not that Keith Wells couldn't be a part of the two deep because talent wise he definitely could. Same goes for a lot of guys I would guess.

In a span of three days, Duane Long goes from naming Hyde the starter to not sure about wanting him on the team because Rod Smith is coming in. You can't make this up. :slappy:

Did you actually read his posts? You realize the first one was posted before the news that Hyde is not elligible and the second one after... You also realize that he has been saying all along that Rod Smith is maybe the #1 back in his recruiting class. Given that, it makes perfect sense that OSU may need a big back like Hyde this year but far less next year. That's not even factoring in his explanation about questioning his being able to qualify eventually if he hasn't already, ability to stay motivated during the next year off, etc.

DUanes biggest issue has always been his fascination with size/body type over production/can the kid play a lick.

The pro football HoF is chock full of players Duane would of deemed not good enough for OSU because they aren't 6.4

Duane would tab Uncle Ricco (good size/rocket arm/throw ball over mountain) over Drew Brees.

Throw in the fact he makes most of his evals based on measurements and 5 plays from a rivals highlight clip.

I could make you think I'm the "next Lebron James" from my highlight clip.
