DT Taron Vincent (San Antonio Brahmas)

I think in about 10 years, people are going to be saying, “Taron Vincent and Yommy Togiai were in the same recruiting class!!?”

I just feel like those two are going to be 1st round picks and future all pros at DT. Obviously, it’s all expectations at this point but I have a great feeling about those two.

If they stay healthy, completely agreed. And his eligibility will be different, but I feel absolutely the same way on Jackson if he is still the player I watched on HS film (or maybe improved post-HS). To me, Jackson was basically the Vincent of his class when he ended up picking Auburn over us. Throwing them all together could be epic if they pan out.

I can't wait to hear the reports from camp on Taron. Dude just does it all and might have the most potential of any DT we've brought in that I can remember in recent history. The depth chart is certainly stacked with interior talent, but there is still an opportunity for a guy like Vincent to break through. While we have a lot of quality depth, I don't see a star with the upside at DT that Taron has on our roster other than Dre'Mont Jones (maybe Togiai from the reports, but different style of player and we'll see).

I see him as a very versatile pass rush threat that can also be equally effective against the run after a little Coach Mick time. Down the road, I see Taron and Togiai as being an absolute force inside, as they compliment each other extremely well. Short term, I think Taron could get in some PT in pass rush situations. Long term, he is going to wreak havoc with Tommy inside (and Antuan Jackson, as I believe he has 3 years of eligibility).

Couldn't agree more! With Vincent, Togai, Jackson, Garrett, Hamilton and company, we will be very strong in the middle in the years to come. The thought of Vincent and Togai lining up next to each other makes me smile.

Ohio State Football 2018 Freshman Report: DT Taron Vincent

Taron-Vincent-Big-Ten-Championship-1-1170x780.jpg

Taron Vincent came to Ohio State from the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He was ranked the No. 1 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 20 player overall in the 2018 recruiting class. He signed with Ohio State over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Texas. He was also the 2017 Maxwell Football Club Defensive National High School Player of the Year.

2018 Season

Vincent played in 10 games last season as a true freshman. As a reserve, he primarily backed up Haskell Garrett, who was backing up starter Dre’Mont Jones.

He played in the first two games of the season, but then did not see action at TCU. Vincent played in the fourth game (Tulane), but then did not see the field in the next two (PSU, IU). It was after the Indiana game, however, that his role grew and he found some rotational snaps in seven of the final eight games, including the final three against Michigan, Northwestern, and Washington.

He finished the season with three tackles. Two of those tackles came in the season opener against Oregon State, and the third came in the Big Ten Championship Game three months later. That third tackle was a fourth-quarter sack of Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson, which was a great way to cap a freshman season and provide a glimpse of what his sophomore season should look like.

If you follow recruiting pretty closely, like I would say I do, u never really forgot about the young guys that don't play in a pivotal role right away. They are just sort of out of site out of mind. But, it's always refreshing when guys move on that you are reminded that there are plenty of young, talented studs just waiting in the wings to pounce on the opportunity to make their mark. I fully expect Taron to play a huge role in that D-line rotation next year.

“BATTERING RAM”: TARON VINCENT JOSTLING TO START ONE YEAR AFTER JOINING TO OHIO STATE AS TOP-RANKED DEFENSIVE TACKLE

105225_h.jpg

Nobody can accuse defensive tackle Taron Vincent of aiming too low.

Collectively, Ohio State's six scholarship defensive linemen who are entering their second seasons of college football played 470 snaps as freshmen in 2018 – with Vincent playing 98, the third-most among them – and that number will likely more than double this fall.

With that, Vincent believes, comes a desire – or self-imposed expectation – for the second-year defensive linemen to play at an extremely high level.

“Just want to dominate the Big Ten, dominate college football,” Vincent said this spring.

That's all, huh?

The group includes defensive ends Tyreke Smith, Tyler Friday, Javontae Jean-Baptsite and Alex Williams, along with defensive tackles Tommy Togiai and Vincent. Four of them – Smith, Friday, Togiai and Vincent – were rated among the top-100 recruits in the 2018 class.

Their opportunities for playing time should increase for each of them this fall. But even in relatively limited snaps, the four who didn’t redshirt flashed at times, picking up 25 combined tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks.

“We got a little glimpse,” Vincent said. “People got a little sneak peek. I think we'll get more opportunity this year playing.”

Vincent, in particular, finds himself in the position of potentially grabbing a much larger share of playing time now that Dre’Mont Jones left college to pursue a career in the NFL.

Being out this long may be an indication he had major shoulder surgery. Just speculation on my part. The good news is that we are very strong in the middle and haven't needed him. The main thing right now is to be a good student off the field and to get healthy.
