Center's Evan Blankenship chooses Ohio State over Pitt

Wednesday, July 19, 2006
Center Area High School senior offensive tackle Evan Blankenship committed to Ohio State on Tuesday afternoon, choosing the Buckeyes over offers from Pitt and Temple.
Blankenship, 6-foot-3, 310 pounds, is rated the No. 18 player in Pennsylvania by Keystone Recruiting and is projected as a guard or center.
He said his biggest adjustments will be switching positions and learning a new system.
"They feel that I have the capabilities," he said. "If I jump in the system right away and everything's clicking, then I might get a chance to be in the rotation," Blankenship said. "Obviously if I'm not ready to play my first year, they'll redshirt me and there's nothing wrong with that."
He said he envisioned himself on the Ohio State and Pitt campuses, but he liked "everything" about Ohio State, including academics, athletics and the size of Ohio Stadium.
"When it came down to Ohio State and Pitt, I obviously saw myself playing in front of 105,000 people, instead of 50,000- 60,000 people (at Heinz Field)," he said.
Blankenship is the seventh player from the Class of 2007 to commit to Ohio State, and the first from outside the state. He will join former WPIAL players Andy Miller (Trinity), Devon Lyons (Woodland Hills) and Rory Nichol (Beaver) in Columbus.

Wednesday, July 19, 2006
By Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Center High School offensive lineman Evan Blankenship just couldn't shake the visions he had as he walked around Columbus, Ohio, a few times in the past year.
"I just kept seeing myself in that Ohio State uniform," said Blankenship, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound senior.
Now, he's going to get that chance. Last night, Blankenship made a verbal commitment to Ohio State, choosing the Buckeyes over Pitt and Temple. He will play guard or center for Ohio State.
One of the big reasons Blankenship chose Ohio State was because his father and many of his relatives are from Ohio.
Blankenship said that Ohio State narrowly edged Pitt for his services.
"Pitt is great, and they were right there and, honestly, I have nothing but respect for their entire coaching staff and I told them that," Blankenship said. "It came down to Ohio State being my first love."
Well - this was pretty much anticipated, but as the first Buckeye OL commit of 2006 - a hearty welcome Evan.
Now lets see Claytor, O'Dowd, (on the OL) and Barksdale (on the DL) commit to fill out the future lines.
I was watching Evan at the UM camp last month. My son was also there with the O line campers.
