DT Michael Hall, Jr. (Cleveland Browns)

Just thinking the same thing Oregon. Script did a great job, and I'm ready to waddle out on the field myself. Love the motivation that Mike has put upon himself. Sounds like he is developing 'controlled talent'. Sure there's bodies in front of him, but when he gets in, and makes an impact, that'll lead to more minutes. Continue to make an impact, more minutes, et cetera et cetera. Frankly, this kind of story is one of the best kind. The lowly 3* kid works hard, puts in the time and energy, keeps his head in the game, and wham. All of a sudden he's looking at first or early second round position in the NFL draft. In my way of thinking, that is what college/football is about. Give the kid the opportunity to excel, as in life, he (or she) can make a difference, and bypass those with more talent, but less motivation. He was a favorite of mine when he selected tOSU, and reading this, will be focused on him when he hits the field. Damn, but I'm looking forward to this season.....Go Bucks!
Hall was a solid 4-Star, top-100 overall prospect in high school.

BB, thanks for the correction. While doesn't apply to Mike, it does to many Buckeyes that worked to make themselves first rounders. Malcolm Jenkins and other DBs come to mind, pardon my gray hair and diminishing brain cells. I'm certain that other followers of this thread can come up with more (and probably better) examples than I obviously can. Go Bucks!

I still remember how excited everyone was about Mike Deandrea. And Bobby Carpenter would probably be pretty good too, or so said that Craig kid who claimed to know him. And oh by the way some kid named AJ Hawk. Oh well, they can’t all be 4 and 5 stars

DT MIKE HALL
Mike Hall received far less playing time than Williams as a true freshman, but the praise he’s received ahead of his second year in the program has been right on par with his classmate. Johnson said he expects “great things” from Hall, who he said quickly ascended from the third-team defense to run with the ones and twos this preseason. Even Williams himself has been in awe of the Ohio native at times, saying Hall’s “potential is crazy” and that “you can see it in practice.”

If Hall can prove that in games as a redshirt freshman, his production will be a bonus for Ohio State’s defensive line.

As I recall (using recent examples), Denzel Burke was a 3* or lowly ranked 4* until later in the recruiting cycle and speaking of another Denzel, Denzel Ward was most definitely a 3* coming in. Seems like our hit rate on lower ranked DB's seems pretty high just from a high-level view.

As to DL, most of our success lately has come from highly ranked guys (which Hall was, he was #91 overall on Rivals and #53 overall on 247). Nick Bosa was a 5* that I swore up and down should have been rated the top ranked recruit or near it, Joey Bosa was a top-50 4* that I also contended should have been near the top of his class, Chase Young was a 5* near the top of his list and I could go on. Jalyn Holmes, Haskell Garrett, Jonathan Cooper, Togiai, Ty Smith, Tyler Friday when healthy...all highly ranked. The only highly ranked DL I can think of that have played but maybe not to expectations are Harrison (still has a chance to be big), Antuan Jackson (highly ranked in HS, not so much coming in as a transfer) The only low-ranked DL that I can think of that worked out well recently are BB Landers and Davon Hamilton, compared to a list of Josh Alabi, Dylan Thompson, Rashod Berry (some success at TE), Cage (could still make an impact, jury is still out), Alex Williams and Jaden McKenzie.

I realize I went on a rant on DL recruiting and this probably might need moved, but it is interesting how the DL recruiting and appurtenant rankings have seemed to have held up. Mike Hall was highly ranked but it sounds like the staff and players think he is going to be the real deal. One of my biggest gripes for a long time during the Tressel years was DT recruiting. Under UFM it got way better and that has continued under Day. The common denominator is obviously LJ Sr there, but I feel really good on Hall along with Tyleik, Vincent, Cage and possibly Kanu. But there is a real chance for Hall to play quite a bit and I love hearing he is working to be in the position to optimize his chances.

Player of the game!

kid looked like Aaron Donald last night….spectacular performance. Can’t remember a more disruptive performance from a DT at tOSU in a pretty long time.
I was just thinking of that comparisons but didn't want to sound like blasphemy. Hall is a stud and deserves to be the starter going forward and let Cage be the depth guy. Hall looked too freaking dominant and unblockable. If this was arguably the best OL well face until the CFP, then he's going to put up some big stats and scare the bejesus out of opposing OCs
