Ohio State football: Fickell?s contract finally a done deal

Ohio State coach Luke Fickell long ago agreed to the provisions of his contract, redone when he was promoted on May 30 after Jim Tressel was forced to resign. But it wasn?t until Wednesday that it became official when Geoffrey S. Chatas, senior vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer, added his signature.

The financial terms did change in the meantime. They include a $400,000 base salary, $200,000 for participation in the coach?s show and other media obligations and $175,000 as his cut of the school?s contract with Nike, with the possibility of bonuses for winning the Big Ten Leaders Division, winning the league title and reaching a bowl game.

The appointment runs through Jan. 31, 2012, but by then he likely will have learned whether the school wants to keep him. If it doesn?t keep him, the deal says Fickell?s previous two-year contract, signed in the spring when he was named assistant head coach, would kick in, and his pay would revert to those terms.

So he may try to stick around under a new head coach? That would be interesting.

That clause wouldn't be included in the contract if he wasn't at least considering it... right?

Heard an interview with Coach Fick, and he said, "I don't have anything to do with the Offense." What a lame answer. As the CEO of the football Bucks, he has oversight responsibilities for both of the O and D, plus the Special Teams (and popcorn sales as well ?).......the only worse answer I ever heard was Coop's, "I coach coaches" which is to say, I never talk to a kid, only their position coaches do......

He's young, and asked to grow up in a hurry. He's doing that, but I'm not sure his learning curve is being accomplished as quickly as the Buckeye fan's Intollerence curve is going downward. They may have already intersected, which means Fick's toast....we'll see.

I don't see Fickell being "let go", ie., "fired". If he's not retained as HC, he'll relegated to his previous position as DC. In the USAF, large organizations (Wings, Numbered Air Forces, Major Commands) have Vice or Deputy Commanders in addition to the Commander. They function as the commanding officer in the absense of the commander, whether the absense is due to leave, medical unavailability, or during the time where the commander may leave the position before his/her replacement arrives for duty. When the commander is back to duty, or as in the latter case, the new commander arrives, the vice/deputy commander reverts back down and it is in no way viewed as a "demotion".

This latter case is sort of the situation that Fickell is in now, only that there is a caveat that the replacement has yet to be named and, if Fickell performs well enough, that replacement will not be named. So, if Fickell is replaced as head coach after this season I see him remaining as the DC unless the incoming HC tosses him. If it happens to be someone like Urban Meyer (i.e., not attached to a current football staff and thus not likely to bring others in), you can all you bet that Fickell will revert to DC and assume additional role as AHC.

I hope this is the case and he remains on staff. My questions here would be what happens to Vrabel? DC's assistant. Probably not, but an interesting problem to have.

If fan approval was the condition for Ohio State coaches to retain their employment, Cooper would have been fired after his third, fourth and fifth seasons. It does not work that way.
