DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

Lansing, MI channel 6 Sports Director:

Officials from the Michigan State University Athletic Department will meet with members of the school’s Board of Trustees on Monday to brief them on the search for a new football coach, a source tells 6 News.

The meeting follows the retirement of former football head coach Mark Dantonio, who announced plans to leave the team on Tuesday. Dantonio, who coached the team for 13 seasons, is the Spartans winningest coach of all time. He says he plans to remain with the school doing work in another capacity.

There’s widespread speculation in the media that Cincinnati football coach Luke Fickell will become the next head coach of the Spartans. Athletic Director Bill Beekman returned from a trip to Cincinnati on Sunday.

Good to good enough coaches in place now at every Big Ten East school.

OSU has a massive talent advantage over any of them but it's the cumulative effect of needing to put a little more out there every week in order to beat MSU, IU, Rutgers and Maryland that we could just do without.

Add in the extra game with the general competence of the West coaching and the calories spent per win ratio, if you will, is going up over the next few years.

Without the benefit other conferences get for being difficult. Since none of the voters actually change their ideas of who is good and who isn't from year to year. Tennessee? Well they're good, right? They won in 98. Minnesota? Ha....fucking suck.

The Clemson/ACC method is undeniably the best.

13 controlled scrimmages then the playoffs. No injuries, no wear and tear. A two game season.

been saying for awhile it is way more than a bigger job for Fick. first and foremost he’s a devoted catholic/family man. his younger kids are immersed in one of the larger east side parishes and just uprooting them now wasn’t good for them. not to say he won’t take the MSU job if the timing was different.
happy he is staying at UC.

Damn MSU fucked something up. If Fickell was willing to take the interview he was at least somewhat interested.

He was interested to see how much they'd offer and MSU just found out the market thinks their job is so fucked that $25-30MM (reportedly) isn't worth it.

I said somewhere else, you eaither go cheap as hell and suck on it for a few years or you have to massively over pay and deal with all the risk that brings.

No other way to handle this for MSU.

Fickell's really in a great position. By interviewing, he shows that he's not a UC lifer and probably gets a raise. If he stays for a while, and I think he could and should given the fit for him in terms of recruiting (especially if we funnel a bunch of not-quite OSU caliber special powers kids and some of our transfer portal guys his way to keep them from our conference competitors), cost of living, Catholic schools, and being close to extended family, I think he can be for UC what Chris Petersen was for Boise St. He's also 12 years younger than purple goblin: If he puts together a string of 10-11 win seasons at UC with a few NY6 bowl appearances , which I think he can do if he does just a bit of self-scouting and gets just a bit more creative with offense and QB development, I think he'll be a heavy favorite to take over ND when purple goblin strokes out, retires, or loses enough to get canned.
