DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

I can't imagine that it wasn't, but I'm sure Stoops feels like he doesn't want to live in the land of the unknown either. I'm fairly certain his fallback job is at Oklahoma, and his next job will be something that can enhance his prospects as a head coach. If that doesn't pan out, back to Okie...

My BEST guess is that Meyer ultimately isn't going to hire Stoops because of the distinct possibility that Stoops would be a one or two year and done coach...it didn't take him long to go after Withers...

I'd prefer Stoops, but what sticks out to me during the presser is that Meyer said he'd be hiring the highest quality staff, that would be here a long time. Not sure Stoops ultimately fits that role...

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Luke Fickell has talked with University of Pittsburgh athletics director Steve Pederson about the Panthers coaching job, but the Ohio State coach said today he has not received an offer.
Fickell said that even if he gets an offer and takes it, he will coach Ohio State in the Gator Bowl against Florida on Jan. 2 before Urban Meyer takes over all responsibilities as Buckeyes head coach.
Unless he takes the Pitt job, Fickell will return to being a Buckeyes assistant coach. Meyer said this week that Fickell will call the defensive signals, though there has not been a formal announcement that Fickell will be the defensive coordinator.
Fickell said that the last few days have been a blur and that aresolution is unclear.
?A lot of things going on,? Fickell said. ?I don?t know anything more than that. I don?t know where they are or what they want to do. They?ve at least mentioned (the job) and reached out a little bit.

Fick to Pitt?

If coach Fick went to Pitt, I wonder if Vrabel will follow. I also wonder how many recruits would consider following him. I am assuming the number would be small, but I hate losing a great coach(es) and possibly a couple recruits.

I wish Pitt would just hire Mark May, schedule a home-and-home with tOSU, and then get thrashed by 60+ points in each game! When asked why Urban went for two on the last score, he would say, "because the Pitt coach is a [Mark May]ing idiot!

Hang around Luke...it'll be your reward for honorably dealing with all the nonsense you did this year!

ESPN (tv) is reporting that Chryst to Pitt is a done deal.

The speculation had died down over the last couple days, but now that the door seems to be closed for sure I'll say I'm glad that Fickell will be coaching at Ohio State next season.

Pause for reflection
In his one and only season as Ohio State coach, Luke Fickell had a mediocre record but kept the team together amid constant turmoil

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? Eight months have elapsed since Luke Fickell was thrust into the head-coaching job at Ohio State. He can?t decide whether his one-season tenure felt like an instant or an eternity.

?It has gone really fast, and it has gone really slow at times, too,? Fickell said. ?I don?t know how it can be like that.?

Today?s Gator Bowl against Florida will be Fickell?s last game in charge of the Buckeyes before returning to being an assistant under new coach Urban Meyer.

His time as coach was both an unbelievable opportunity and a thankless trespass through a minefield. He took over at 37 years old despite having no prior head-coaching experience, almost unheard of for a program like Ohio State?s. But he also had to navigate his team through a time of scandal and suspensions both known and unforeseen.

The Buckeyes finished with a 6-6 record, their worst since 1999. With an unflinching lack of self-pity for himself or his players, Fickell also held a team together that easily could have fractured under such trying circumstances. Both are his legacy.

At 11 p.m. on May 29, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith called Fickell and told him to arrange a staff meeting for the next morning. Smith did not inform him that he had asked Jim Tressel to resign because of NCAA violations.

Fickell lay awake all night, wondering about all the possibilities. He figured Smith wanted to strategize about the upcoming Sports Illustrated story about OSU that was rumored to be a bombshell (though it mostly fizzled).

Fickell had long believed that Tressel would be the first Ohio State coach since Paul Brown during World War II to set his own terms on when and how he would leave. He couldn?t quite accept the notion that Tressel might be forced out, let alone that he might be asked to succeed him.

At 8 a.m. on May 30, Smith told Fickell that was exactly what would happen.

?We sat there and talked for 10 to 15 minutes and we went straight from my office to the staff (meeting),? Fickell said. ?There was nothing you could do but stand up and be confident in what you?re doing and take some leadership.?

Luke Fickell: "Nobody jumped just to go chase money because of how special Ohio State is. That's how coach [Jim Tressel] put it all together. It's not about the money. And it's such a special place."

Fickell: "I think it was the type of people that were put together. And I'm not sure there are many places you could go and say it's as good of a true football program. You've got to go to the NFL, in my opinion."

Fickell: "It's going to be tough to beat. The landscape of college football is going to change, it's going to be different. But when you look back at it, it's going to be tough to beat the 10 years here of everything that we've done. If you really look at the body of work, not just the games won and the titles because there were times when they had more, but the true body of work is tough to beat. The good kids and all the things that have happened here, that's what you'll remember."

JT was out as of May 30th. The article was dated December 30th. How does exactly 7 months become 8 months?

The author probably just did a quick search to jog his memory and came up with "May 2011" for when Jim Tressel was ousted.

May, June, July, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec

Coach Fick apparently got the loudest ovation of any moment ever at Value City Arena according to those in attendance.

Glad to see he's getting the respect he deserves/

Check the video posted in Urban's thread. Clearly the loudest ovation & well deserved.
