DT Kayden McDonald (National Champion)

CAN I GET A BIG MAC? Donovan Jackson, Cody Simon, Tyleik Williams, Carnell Tate and Lathan Ransom have all suffered bumps, bruises and other ailments that forced them to miss at least one game for Ohio State this season. When each of them was on the mend, Day described them as “day-to-day.” This week, he used the label for Williams a second time after the defensive tackle exited the Penn State game in the fourth quarter.

Even though Day said Williams is trending toward being available on Saturday, considering Ohio State is a 38-point favorite over Purdue – and the Buckeyes don’t need him to win — it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s a game-time decision and does not appear in the contest. Then, after the game, Day will comment, “Tyleik could have played in an emergency,” and we will all move on to Northwestern.

If Williams does, in fact, miss the Purdue game, Ohio State would love to see what Kayden McDonald could do with extra opportunities. McDonald has flashed in goal-line situations the past two weeks, maximizing the size and strength of his 6-foot-3, 326-pound frame to bulldoze Nebraska and Penn State offensive linemen and running backs inches from the end zone.

McDonald’s success in those moments made Knowles call the sophomore defensive tackle one of the best game-wreckers on the defensive line.

“When you put him in those situations, he’s head up at the center, and his job is to knock the center back. I think he’s showing the ability to really change the game and change the line of scrimmage,” Knowles said. “He’s definitely someone who’s earning himself more playing time.”

Day agreed with his defensive coordinator.

“K-Mac really stepped us for us. We’re hoping he can continue to give us more and more snaps,” he said. “Two weeks in a row, there’s been big spots for him to step up in. We’re gonna continue to try and find ways to get him on the field.”

“Every Tuesday during inside run drill, he gets me a couple of times,” Ohio State center Seth McLaughlin said. “That kid's a freak on the inside, and when he just lines up and he gets to run forward and run through somebody's face, he's going to do really, really well. So I'm happy to see it happen to other people and not just me.”

Fantastic game by Bucks tonight…..like Kayden a lot, but he struggled tonight. Probably a bit of a match-up issue but among the DT’s we rotated tonight, K-Mac wasn’t the best.

Great year in general….but tonight wasn’t his best. JMO.
He'll be good, honestly glad he can take his lumps now and not hurt the defense. Kayden will learn, get positive body development in S&C, and be the perfect replacement to Tyleik imo. Just glad we have a year to groom that development.

Needs some love for the 1st and goal absolute stuff against Texas. He moved the OC and guard 1.5 yards backwards. On second down, he was partially responsible for Caleb Downs shooting through the gap.

Kid is amazing at being an anchor on the goal line. Will be fun to see him get more reps as he progresses in the strength and conditioning program.

Kid is amazing in his limited snaps though. Like a low-key specialist.

The Ohio State football team had plenty of unsung heroes in its Cotton Bowl win

The Ohio State football team has a few guys who deserve more credit for their performances in the Cotton Bowl.

Kayden McDonald
The sophomore defensive lineman from Suwanee, Georgia is a very large person. McDonald is 6’3”, 326 pounds and he used every bit of that size when he lined up across from the Texas center on the first play of the Buckeyes’ epic goal line stand late in the fourth quarter. When the ball was snapped, McDonald got under the center, stood him up, and drove him a step backward.

All of that alone will get a guy a pat on the back, but he wasn’t done just yet. After blowing up the center, McDonald shed the block and met the ball carrier in the hole at about the same time Tuimoloau came in from the side. Everything that happened after this on the goal line stand can be traced back to Kayden McDonald making this outstanding play.

Big season ahead

Absolutely, I want him to enjoy the moment and then keep paying that moment forward. I think he slots in perfect for Tyleik and can be just as good.

I know it is hard for us to turn off our future brains, but we won a Natty and still got crucial reps to our DL that we have begged for. McDonald, Curry, Jackson, Kanu, etc. Our defensive front is going to be entirely changed except for Styles, so these guys need to make the next step and I think they will. McDonald has a great opportunity coming up and he is prepared now.
