DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

A classy young man from an obviously very classy family joins the Buckeyes. God's in His heaven and all's right with the world!

XP, wherever you are, congratulations to you for helping Garrett make this most important decision of his young life.

In the end, Garrett says he went with his heart, which is always the right way to go. He liked the coaches and knew they sincerely liked him. He became friends with his future teammates and got to meet some of the old guard who wore the scarlet and gray that he'll put on in 2008. And he knew that the academic environment at tOSU is excellent and only getting better. It's 'The University of the American Dream'.

Welcome to the family, Garrett. Stay humble, work hard, listen to your coaches and your future will be so bright you'll need shades!

Here is the story from the Bucyrus newspaper.

Chicago prep star chooses Buckeyes
BuckeyeBuzz.com

Garrett Goebel, one of the nation's top high school linemen, announced Friday that he will play his college football at Ohio State in the fall of 2008, according to a published report on the Chicago Tribune's Web site. Goebel, a 6-foot-4-inch, 270-pound lineman at Lombard (Ill.) Montini Catholic, chose Ohio State rather than Michigan. Ranked the third-best defensive tackle entering this season by scout.com, Goebel was Illinois' Class AA wrestling state champion at 285 pounds in 2006-07.

Who's XP?

Welcome Garrett!

XP = XPUNISHR = Brian E. Goebel, who has been Garrett's recruiting manager (attended every "unofficial visit" besides his 2nd trips to OSU & Notre Dame), academic & spiritual advisor for many years. I am Garrett's uncle however he is more like a son to me as I spend time with him everyday (I see Garrett more than my own children who reside with their mother 20 miles from my home).

I have counseled Garrett in many area's and shared with him my own college football experience along with a plethora of poor decisions I made which hopefully Garrett will avoid as he has shown maturity well beyond his age thus far and I envision him continuing to lead a GOD HONORING lifestyle. Humble beyond my imagination and has had the self control to remain focused & dedicated to achieving the goals he sets for himself. There may be better athletes than Garrett but I have seen nobody OUTWORK him (that probably comes from working concrete for his dad's company since age 8)

XP can't wait to watch Garrett at the state tourny and at team state, Montini might get over that double A title hump this year. I thought for sure you guys would beat Sandburg last year, but they are a great program. I just wish you guys had Pat Macaffrey for more then one year.

Any chance that XP can "dot the I" at the first home game of 2008? :)

Any chance you'd be willing to dot the I with XP?

Welcome to the Buckeye family, Garrett!

How is this for an offer list?

West Virginia, Nebraska, Penn State, Virginia, Iowa State, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan, Cincinnati, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina State, Eastern Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Purdue.

Couldn't have made a bad decision between any of the four finalists...all are great programs. Glad to hear his heart is what will be leading him to Columbus...those are the kind of kids you build programs around.
