DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

Garrett says he is not ready to go on record with any favorites but he does like tOSU and is very comfortable with the staff and their recruiting efforts.

Well as shy and quiet as Garrett is, right now, that's about all you can ask for. I say in the long run...he's ours. Reel'em in!

Crusader is right. ND's staff has mentioned wanting to bring in 5 DL recruits this year, so there are still two DL spots available. Its been speculated that ND will take just about any of their current offers for the next DL verbal, and get selective after that. So unless Omar Hunter betrays his childhood fandom of Michigan (a school all of us can agree on disliking) and verbals to ND within the next month, Goebel still has all his options wide open.

A lot of ND guys think that Goebel's mentioning ND as a favorite even when they hadn't offered, his Catholic HS background, and some of the comments from the free article linked earlier in this thread paint ND as the preliminary leader, before he goes on his three visits this summer (UM, OSU, ND). Not to mention, he'll be in South Bend twice this summer, the second time being for their football camp.

He has been pretty tight lipped about his favorites though, so its all theorizing at this juncture.

What is it about Goebel that has your fan base thinking he'll be a Buckeye? Honest curiosity.

From what I've heard, Garrett appreciates the priority that OSU has shown him. Goebel is OSU's primary focus wrt DT recruiting, and possibly any position. Nix has been headed to Pitt for awhile, Rowell does not have an offer, & Mobley is more DL than pure DT at this point.

XPunishr is close to the goebel situation. This should cover a few of the answers... check your inbox as well.

How does the ND offer change things? I would think an offer from them would be hard to turn down for a kid who lives in Illinois and goes to a Catholic school...
Garrett did not choose his high school because it is a relatively small, private CATHOLIC school. Many other factors resulted in his H.S. choice. Garrett has ALWAYS tried to avoid attention (his character, humility, respect are RARE given his age / accomplishments) On the field (or wrestling mat) he is a fearless animal. Otherwise a compassionate, caring kid who is trying to be courteous and honest.

One of our posters, XPUNISHR, is very close to Garrett. I'll let him speak for himself [with certain passages highlighted, and editorial comments in square brackets].

EXACTLY!!!.....This "personalized visit" [to Ohio State] left a favorable impression, even excitement in a kid who has not been overly excitable after past visits to other Big 10 programs. However, by nature Garrett is very quiet, humble..much like [current Buckeye DT and high school wrestler] Dexter Larimore whom Garrett spent Friday pm visiting. I think the quality / character of coaches / players that Garrett met with made him feel as though this may be the perfect fit for him.

Goebel recieved offer from Tennessee Volunteers today , Michigan yesterday (offer #17+ ??), yet Garrett still has BUCKEYE's among his favorites. Garrett ( & Family) have the utmost respect for Buckeye Coaching staff & players (not to mention the verbally committed recruits!!)
Goebel hopes to make another "unofficial visit" to Columbus in the near future.

It baffles me why all the talk about "Canes" offer from several weeks ago(over a month?) when from what I've read (and KNOW) Goebel would be more likely spotted at Disney World than Coral Gables. Florida State Offered, and sources tell me Gators soon.....GOEBEL LOVES the BUCKEYES

PERHAPS.your scenario could play itself out as you described....but only GOD knows this. I can confirm that the Buckeyes are in his top (3) three but with additional offers from top programs Garrett HAS TO CHECK OUT A FEW MORE SCHOOLS. Garrett has NEVER liked attention / recognition as he says "I do not need to hear what I have accomplished, I know this and strive to achieve my future goals...not dwell on past history"...he likes the fact that OSU has some great O-lineman committed!! This alone has him salivating for the chance to compete w / top dogs from 2008 class.(not to mention the upper classmen). Time will tell...unfortunately more time than we had originally planned (due to increasing amount of quality offers)

"Our" interview with Garrett:

Straight Six with Garrett Goebel

I'm certainly not going to "call" Garrett to Ohio State, but currently the signs are pointing more toward Columbus than South Bend. As always, FWIW....

Thanks for the perspective. I can see where your buzz is coming from, honestly.

Just don't overlook Notre Dame is all, and think this thing is a slam dunk for OSU. In this scout article (free), there are plenty signs that, if he were to verbal to ND, and you were to look back, you could've definitely seen coming. All the things about ND are definite positives for ND fans, but some stand out even more than others:

Goebel already has an unofficial visit scheduled with Notre Dame on May 30. "I love all the tradition they have," he said. "Everything about them...their stadium, the Golden Dome, the coaches...it's just all great. I also know a few guys who are already committed to them and they are really excited. They can't wait to go there and it would be nice to already know some people."

He says that the Irish are recruiting him the hardest. "They text me a lot," Goebel said. "I call them pretty regularly."
And the article was for a national audience, not just Irish Eyes. A lot of guys on my board favorite ND board rag about Allen Wallace slanting his articles away from ND. Then again, these are ND fans, many of whom can get pretty twitchy when the media isn't completely enamored with them, so I'm a little suspicious of their word on Wallace.

All I'm saying is, this thing isn't over, and while the lot of you are Buckeye fans through and through, if he were to end up at ND, there were definitely signs that could've pointed to it. Though, I truly think this thing isn't over, that he has yet to make up his mind, rather than have a good idea about it and simply eliminate the remainders.

Thanks for the well documented and tangible response! Impressive.

In that very same article you posted an exert from he used these two descripitive words for Tressel and the statdium/facilities respecively:

"Amazing and unbelieveable."

Both of which are > "great."

:wink2:

(Yes, I'm not serious. Just having a little fun with "the ND guy.")
