DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

Goebel already a rising star for OSU
The Locals

BY STEVE TUCKER [email protected]
It's not that Garrett Goebel couldn't wait to sign his letter of intent Wednesday. Sure, the big lineman from Montini was excited, but Ohio State wanted his letter first thing -- and first thing was at 6 a.m.

''They asked if I would sign and fax it in early,'' Goebel said. ''And the earliest I could do it was 6.

''I'm very excited about going to Ohio State. I've been in touch with the coaches all the time. This is a great reward for hard work.''

X, if Garrett, brings the same killer instinct and desire to excel as the other gladiators, we tOSU fans are in for a treat the next few years, in watching the new Gladiator destroy O-lineman and devour RB's and QB's. I almost feel sorry for the rest of the B10......nah

By the way congrats on having GG officially a Buckeye, and is he putting more effort towards his endurance by at least letting a few opponents on the mat last til the second period?

I just returned from Garrett's "sectional" tournament (which decides who advances to State Championships next weekend @ U of I. In Garrett;s last 19 matches no opponent has scored a point on Garrett nor has anybody made it to the 2nd period. Garrett has broken the IL State record for most pins in varsity career and his individual goal is to be first wrestler EVER (in IL) to pin all his opponents thru regional, sectional & State shampionship tournaments. He has worked hard on his conditioning despite this. preparing for June arrival in Columbus.

Thanks for keeping us updated on Garrett's progress. I love how his goals are out there, yet attainable if he works his behind off.

I know I keep joking about his conditioning in regards to his matches not going the distance, but wrestling and boxing have to be two of the toughest sports in terms of conditioning with their give %100 all out, or lose now nature. I have no doubts that GG will come in ready to rock come summer camp.

Thy wish has been granted, courtesy of two pathetic excuses for wrestling officials!!.Garrett wrestled an entire match winning 8 - 0. his opponent laid flat on his stomach only moving opposite to Garrett's pinning combinations. Five times Garrett just sat up holding his arms out hoping an official would call "stalling penalty on opponent".....his opponent did not even get a warning call for stalling then in 3 rd period the official said "Come on guys lets keep this 8 - 0 score. This infuriated Goebel which resulted in a barrage of cross-faces, followed by bloodied nose and lip to his opponent. Nobody in the stands could not believe how this kid was allowed to do absolutely nothing. Garrett's first words to me following this match were "I hope I get to wrestle this kid in the 1st round next week (at IHSA State Championships)
I attempted to put a positive spin on this ordeal by reminding Garrett that "at least you got a full match in to prepare for any tough tests you may face next weekend"

Montini led the field by advancing 10 wrestlers downstate, including six sectional title-winners and a second-place finisher.

"We're all wrestling tough, and we're coming on at the end of the year," said Montini's Dan Grimes (189 pounds), who won 9-6 over Addison Trail's Arber Bebo to secure his first sectional title. "And going into team state, we'll need every weapon we have."

Montini's other titles came from Jake Gregerson (130), Isaiah Gonzalez (145), Dan Stelter (160), Carl Foreside (171) and heavyweight Garrett Goebel. Frank Baer (135) placed second, while Sam Brody (103), Colton Rasche (112) and Benny Marti (125) placed third.

X, it is a shame for Garrett to lose out on a chance to reach his goal of all pins because of that other wrestler's attempt at survival and not victory, what a way to be kept from a goal :(

I'm not a very good predictor of things, but if that stalling kid is slated to wrestle Garrett again, it would not suprise me if he "tweaks" his ankle in warmups and forfeits so Garrett can't treat him like a rag doll and take out his frustrations on the guy.

Garrett still has the opportunity to become first I.H.S.A wrestler in history to potentially pin ALL OPPONENTS at next weekends State tournament. Time will tell...he is as hungry as I've seen him.
