DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

That is impressive-white DL from the Midwest gets an offer from Da U'-speaks highly of his potential.
It would speak to his ability regardless of skin tone.
It is unusual to see a Catholic school kid specifically blow off ND in favor of the "Big 10".
He doesn't have an ND offer, and visited there a few weeks ago, saying he'd keep in touch. I don't see him ending up there, but he doesn't seem to be blowing them off.

Not me...at least not yet. They already have one DT committed (Cwynar) and have offers out to at least four others. I think Goebel is a kid that will end up in S&G, especially once Brewster/Adams/Stoney go after him.

Mr Goebel said this about the Irish:

Notre Dame also has great football tradition and I really like the coaches. They have a great defense and they are always a top team and do well every year.

He certainly knows how to say the right things, but there's no amount of spinning that can make the Irish D look great.

I got the impression from an earlier Irish Eyes article that Goebel thought that ND was just okay after he visited. He said nice things and was polite, but it didn't seem like they would be a strong challenger.

It is strange that a few weeks ago he said that OSU and Wiscy were his top two and then in the Allen Wallace article he doesn't have anything specific to say about either team.

With no inside info, just reading between the lines on what he has said and using some common sense, I really think we are the team to beat. With no other DT offers yet, you could guess that the coaches feel okay about our chances. Plus, he seemed really impressed with our history of making wrestlers into good DTs. Having Fickell on staff should also be a huge boost. I hope I'm right about this because Goebel is one of the most important recruits left out there IMO.
