DT Dre'Mont Jones (Seattle Seahawks)

Maybe, but I'm thinking Mike Weber was (at least) equally important on the offensive side.

Orgasmic might not overstate it.

JK Dobbins and multiple HBs would make losing Weber a non factor. He was house money. We're losing our entire starting DL and a number of key depth players. Not to mention that NCs are won on the line and LJsr liked to rotate.

I don't follow? We return 3 starting DL and a number of depth guys and to top it off we are arguably upgrading at the other DE position with Young.

I think his comment was in regards to it being equal getting Mikey back compared to DJones. I agree that getting D Jones back was quite a bit more important.

In fact, I was very impressed with Antonio Williams when he got PT. Plus we know that true freshman RBs can make a big impact. That’s true throughout college football so getting Teague and Sneed is just more depth. Either of those guys could earn time as well. Plus McCall and Gill. And Parris absolutely should get more handoffs out of the H. I think it suits him better than catching the ball does. So it’s not hard to find someone to tote the rock IMO.

To be clear- I am super excited to get Mikey back. He looked great down the stretch and I think he is very under appreciated and could make a big impact next season. But compared to what D Jones will do to offset the losses at DE will be more impactful IMO.

I contend that (a healthy) Weber is an equal to Dobbins and (probably) is much better than the "multiple HBs". Having the 1 -2 punch of Dobbins and Weber at running back in 2018 is a very big deal. Besides there is an old coaches adage: "you can never have too many good running backs".

If Dre'Mont declared, the crown jewel of the DT room is gone, leaving behind Landers, Cornell, Hamilton and some youngsters (to dwell in the realm of grown men, though Jackson is a bit of a wildcard).
If Weber declared, the crown jewel of the RB room is still starting, with McCall, Williams, Campbell to tote the rock and Snead, Gill, Teague arriving

Weber's value is not similar to Dre'Mont's. That said, having Weber back is awesome, and he really came on strong as he became healthy late in the year. He also brings a gear that JK has not shown yet, and his pass protection has always been better.

Thank you for articulating what i said a little better. I wasn't trying to diminish the importance of Weber, as he's a great talent. But the RB depth wouldn't be affected a terrible amount of he left. Unlike if Jones declared, we are then down to Bosa and Young as the most dynamic DL, and the middle is good talent to unproven talent. Jones back makes this DL quite formidable to go with the DE mentioned.

I'm happy happy that both are back, but like we all know, games and NCs are won in the trenches

I believe we will be slightly better on the dline. Jackson will be an immediate impact guy in the middle. He might as well be a junior. Grown ass man. Cooper will be more than adequate. Bosa will be a better version of himself because he is a year older. Young is going to be a freak and will be better than Lewis and Hubbard by the end of the year.

I Was Just Thinking: The Return of Dre’Mont Jones

DreMont-Jones-at-Indiana-1170x780.jpg

It was a busy Thursday around the world of Ohio State football, as Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, and Dre’Mont Jones all announced their intentions to return to OSU for one more go-round. Each of them will be welcomed back with open arms, and each brings back something unique that the Buckeyes will be able to use in 2018.

When thinking about what Dre’Mont Jones will be able to provide next year, however, the answer is whatever the Buckeyes need.

Simply based on the number of defensive linemen that Ohio State is losing — defensive ends Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes, and Sam Hubbard, and defensive tackles Michael Hill and Tracy Sprinkle — Jones’ return not only stops the bleeding, but it sews up the wound pretty well too.

Don’t get me wrong, the Buckeyes wouldn’t have been undermanned without Jones next year, but with him, they can do pretty much whatever they want.

Jones will be one of 10 defensive tackles on the roster next season. That’s a lot. And they will all be eligible to play in 2019 as well. This past season, the Buckeyes were able to play 4-6 defensive tackles in a rotation through the course of a game. With the desire to have the Rushmen on the field on passing downs, there just aren’t that many snaps for defensive tackles.

Dre’Mont Jones is going to change that next year, however.

As Nick Bosa said well before a decision was made, Jones would return because he’s going to have many more opportunities to rush the passer in 2018 as part of the Rushmen package.

“Dre’Mont is going to finally get some third-down reps in the nickel package and he’s one of the best pass rushers I’ve ever seen in practice, so people haven’t really haven’t seen that aspect of his game. He’s fun to watch, so it’s going to be fun,” he said.

“He hasn’t been able to showcase his pass rush yet. And when he does, the nation is going to be like, ‘All right, we’re taking him.’”

With more opportunities to show what he can do as a pass rusher, Jones could greatly impact his draft stock for the 2019 NFL Draft. He could also go on to help the 2018 OSU defensive line be the best in the country.

Even though Ohio State returns a number of very talented defensive tackles, keeping Jones in the fold gives the Buckeyes many more options.

OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE TACKLE DRE'MONT JONES LOOKING TO MAXIMIZE HIS DECISION TO RETURN FOR 2018

90420_h.jpg

Among all the Ohio State players who could have declared for the 2018 NFL draft but decided to stay in Columbus for one more year instead, no one was projected to be drafted earlier than Dre’Mont Jones.

Considering that the Ohio State defensive tackle was ranked as the 35th-best overall prospect if he declared for the draft by Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, and was widely expected to be an early-round pick, it would have come as little surprise if Jones decided to go pro despite his two remaining years of collegiate eligibility.

Jones is leaving money on the table for 2018 by staying in school, and he acknowledges that wasn’t an easy decision. Ultimately, however, Jones came to the determination that being a Buckeye for one more year was the best move for his long-term future.

"I feel like I can maximize myself," Jones said Friday in his first meeting with the media since his decision.

Jones’ decision to stay in school wasn’t one that was made hastily. While most of his teammates who had NFL draft decisions to make claimed that they were focused solely on playing for the Buckeyes during the season, Jones was candid about how much his decision weighed on him.

"I think about it every day," Jones said. "Ever since it was first brought up to me, whether I say I don’t talk about it right now, it’s still on my mind. It’s hard not to."

Jones recognizes, though, that while he would have been selected in this year’s draft, he could be an even higher selection in the 2019 NFL draft – assuming he declares after his redshirt junior season, which he expects to but has not committed to – if he can continue to improve his game next season.

A sociology major, Jones says he could graduate by the end of 2018, depending on how he schedules his classes, and that was a factor in his decision to return, too.

Some players in Jones’ position would have decided to leave for the NFL now because of the possibility that he could suffer an injury next season that could hurt his draft stock as a result. Jones, however, said he did not consider leaving for that reason.

"I think the whole risk thing is very overplayed," Jones said. "You can get hurt doing anything. I can get hurt walking outside and get hit by a car."
