DT Depth and Recruiting (Split from Barksdale)

UltimateNut

Go Bucks!
As someone said earlier in the thread, tOSU has signed one DT as of right now between last year and this year's class.

This could be a cause for concern, but a quick look at the depth chart might make you feel better. The biggest problem is actual game experience.

Depth: Denlinger, Garnier (Auburn transfer), Abdallah, Worthington, Larimore

Possibilities: Barrow, Dublin

It would be great to see JB in Scaret and Gray, but it's not like tOSU will be sitting empty-handed without him.

Why do you people insist on counting Garnier? He was a walk on at Auburn and is the same here. If you have watched a practice you would know that he will never see the field.

...and the Iowa fans were likely saying the same thing about their walk-on RBs in 04.

At this time last year, I'm sure most of us didn't really count Antonio Smith as a DB either. Check him out now. Started at CB opposite Jenkins, was All-Big Ten, and was a Thorpe Award finalist this past year. Not bad for a walk-on.

I agree with Nut. Be easy, homie. The kid has 8-9 months here to prove he's worthy of seeing the field.

I'm not trying to be a doomsday person but moreso a realist here...you did point out the biggest flaw but it is a big flaw...playing time. Denlinger has looked good in the spring game and has got a pretty good review overall. Then Garnier hasn't made any noise and is a walk-on(not counting him out but just saying), Abdallah has underachieved so far and is quickly being passed on the depth chart, Worthington has played some this year but needs to add some serious mass to be effective at DT at 6'7 imo, and Larimore I haven't heard much from but I was high on him coming in here. Rose is too quick off the edge to move to DT, Dublin is a LEO and has a better chance at LB than DT(where he got manhandled at in high school because he was out of position), and Barrow is a possibility. So in summary, yes we MAY be alright at DT and we certainly have the coaches here to develop the talent we do have, but the reality remains that we only have grabbed 1 DT in 2 years and even if it somehow may not hurt next year, I believe we are going to see the effects from it when the '06 and '07 class are the upperclassmen and we only have Larimore as an upperclassmen in the middle. Even union has mentioned that the staff was has been disappointed with the interior DL recruiting and they will need to land plenty of talent at DT in '08, especially if we miss on Barksdale. I think it's perfectly fine to be disappointed with the recruiting at DT but just know that this class will be outstanding with or without JB and that the coaches were told by both Brent and JB that they would be Buckeyes. With all that said, JB may have just been saying that to keep the suspense up or will somehow enroll past the start date but we'll know soon enough.

I've said it before and I will say it one more time before we get back to Joseph, if there is one position you need not worry about on the tOSU football team, it is Jim Heacock's position.

So, good discussion on DL, but we have that somewhere else...back to Joseph please.

And I'll say it one more time, Rose is too big to not play at DT. Expect to see him there.
For the past year, Barksdale's recruitment has been a complete circus. Does anyone expect that to change once he actually selects a school? Does anyone really want that act in Columbus?

Michigan dropped him, Texas dropped him, Notre Dame dropped him ... despite the five-star talent. Next....

I hope the kid comes, I truely do. But as a counter point, have you guys seen the size of our "ends". Fellas, we have kids that came in at 220-240 that are now pushing 260-280. That is plenty big for Tackle.

Good luck to Mr Barksdale where ever he ends up. I have to think that he sits around and thinks of ways to screw with the recruiting services. He has a wicked sense of humor.

Read somewhere where Dublin was up to 6-5 270#. If this is true-he could be a candidate to play down. A lot of great DT's grew into the position. Hopefully, with another 18 months of weight training. He could be in the rotation at DT in 08.

Grad I agree to a point.... but for a coach to make kids a diamond they need to have coal to work with first and I think we might be missing that somewhat with the short numbers at DT.

With the depth and all the other facotrs for OSU I am suprised JB could end up somewhere else, but the kids have to go where they feel the next 4-5 years will be best spent.

Good luck to him where ever he goes.

There is plenty of coal out there Craig...that is my point. DL/OL are the most difficult positions to project. That projection relies heavily on coaching for development and system for success...Jim Heacock is a great one in both areas.
