That's a pain in the buns
Anyone else watch this show on National Geographic?

Pretty crazy these people don't live any form of normal life, but a life of just preparing their families for these disasters.

We were watching some of it yesterday. These people are completely nuts. While some of them have thoroughly thought everything through, they are still nuts. I think they should start interviewing their neighbors to see what they think about it all.

Keep in mind that shows like this just focus on the most shocking fringe examples for the shock/ratings value.

So it's like pretty much every other show on "NatGeo".

Ralston actually bought land specifically to be around like minded neighbors.

What is the practicality of this kind of preparation? When is the last time a "doomsday event" struck which would require such prep?

What is it they're prepping for, anyway? Global nuclear war? An extinction event? This just doesn't make sense to me. No amount of bullets are going to help you survive nuclear fallout. And even if you live through the event, you're stuck with the radiation, meaning a lingering, slow death.

Nuh Uh. According to some of them, as long as you're to the west of the blast you're set. Due to the prevailing winds blowing everything west to east :atom: :bones:

These folks are nuts. Unless one of them turns out to be right........

The idea of societal breakdown is so foreign to us that even considering it is almost an impossibilty. What I think people need to be aware of is society of today is SO much different than society of just 100 years ago. There is just so many more interdependent (and fragile) systems that we count on now that we did not rather recently. A functioning power grid, easily available fuel, reliable food production and distribution, functioning news and information outlets, easily available emergency and medical care, a stable and functioning currency/financial/banking system. On and on. Population and population densities are now so much larger because of these systems that a severe and/or persistent shock to one or more of these would very quickly effect a lot of people. People that are very used to having them around. Something to at least consider.....
