Does Omar Vizquel belong in the HOF?

out of chaos comes playoffs

2877 hits and somewhat into the leather. 11 time gold glover, 3 time all star. 272 career batting average. 404 steals and 1445 runs scored.

By comparison Ozzie Smith 2460 hits and also into the leather. 13 time gold glover, 15 time all star. 262 career average. 580 steals and 1257 runs scored. One world series ring.

In Ozzie's defense he probably had more range in the field than Omar but that is about all you can say to distinguish the best two defensive shortstops of anyone alive has ever seen play.

First ballot HOF like the Wizard, probably not, but Omar should be in Cooperstown no doubt in my mind.

Any thoughts / discussion?

I would say there is no doubt. Maybe Ozzie showed a little more flash but I think that Omar could make every play that Ozzie made. The only reason that Omar was not an All-Star more often was because of a guy named Derek Jeter and I think that is the only reason.

I think he is just on his Gold Gloves alone. Some of the plays he made were unbelievable. And like Litl said above me, the only reason why he wasn't an All-Star during that time was because of Derek Jeter, and the NY name

Not just Jeter, but Ripken and A-Fraud too.

Vizquel is the best fielding SS not named Ozzie Smith and that comes from the biggest Ripken fan alive.

2800 hits and 400 steals with that amount of gold gloves *might* get him in on the first ballot, but if it doesn't, he won't last past 5 years.

SS is becoming much more offensive though nowadays is the only thing that gives me any doubt. There should be no doubt though at all.

Jose Mesa probably disagrees, but Jose Mesa probably owes Omar a ring too.

While looking up the stats for Ozzie I found out that he won a reverse triple crown with the lowest BA, HR, and RBI of anyone in the NL with enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting crown.

lots of HOFers on those mid 90's Tribe teams.

Omar, Robbie Alomar, and Jim Thome for sure. Manny Ramirez on pure HR's alone belongs but he may not get credit for it with the drug thing.
I very much doubt if Manny will make the HOF for the reason you mentioned. The other two guys might not make it on the first ballot but I definitely HOF candidates.

Man oh man.. were those great days... not a better infield middle combo on planet earth....

Sandy Alomar behind the plate... Kenny Loften in Center...

and that bare-handed catch that Omar made routine...

great memories.. and I got to go to so many of those games and the world series..

and Mesa choked

I went to a Tribe game in 1994 in early April on a Saturday afternoon and the day was frigid as one could imagine. It was about 10 or 12 games into the season, and Omar was brand new to the team. Dude made 3 errors that game and looked absolutely brutal in the process. One thing I'll never forget is the grace and professionalism that he handled the questions with after the game. No excuses, dude basically admitted that he sucked that day, as well as he should have.

After that one game, he became to me the greatest defensive shortstop to ever play the game. He has the best fielding % in baseball history for the key position in the infield. His 3 All-Star Appearances were limited because in his heyday, shortstop became a position of big time run producers and NOT pure defensive specialists.

To me, he is first ballot, no questions. Omar's notoriety didn't increase because of the success of the team overall during the time he was her. NO! What happened was that the success of the team was spearheaded by what HE brought to the team during his time here.

Death
Taxes
Omar in the Hall:oh:

Peace

This discussion is bringing back good memories...and one bad one.

Seriously though, Omar definitely belongs in the HOF. Some of the plays he made were amazing, and I was lucky to see him play several times at the Jake.
