Could be a universal joint/axle issue. Once the rubber boot covering the universal joint gets broken/torn the axle is susceptible to wear.
If it were a timing belt that broke, on overhead cam engines like your Toyota, that would cause major engine damage. The 4 cylinder Camry engine is very robust and with basic maintenance will last to 150-200 thousand miles without a major rebuild.
