DL Simon Fraser (Official Thread)

And that's probably why OSU got its ass handed to it by UM's line which could handle a quick but undersized line. Heacock should have left Scott outside and started Pitcock inside.

We'll see how great Fraser does this year when he's not getting the scraps to clean up but has to do the leading. I'm saying he doesn't do much.
it wasn't so much the tOSU's D-line got pushed around as it was there was no middle LB to make the tackles... are you forgetting how banged up our LB crew was at the end of last season?

Louis did you forget the Washingon game? Fraser outplayed every lineman on the defensive front. Don't speak that bullshit acting like he will falter due to graduation of Smith, Anderson, and Scott. They rotate quite a few different lineman into that mix, they will be ready for this season. Pitcock will make the departure of Anderson that less painless (he was our most valuable defensive lineman last season).

Last time I checked we are Ohio State, we do not rebuild a damn defensive front, we replace and create new stars on a yearly basis.

OSU's defensive line got pushed around

And got very little pressure on the immobile Navarre. We shouldn't have missed a beat at LB with Carpenter because he had played and had been making plays throughout the course of the season. We just got dominated upfront, though. And that's why Perry had a big game and Navarre had time to get the ball to Edwards. Quick but undersized linemen can be defeated with a straight ahead power running game which UM had and of course holding them well like Pape did Smith when passing helps. And they have a pretty good group in Lentz, Baas, and Stenavich returning.

Fraser's hype rests on one game ? I don't think he's that talented, I think he was the beneficiary of playing around other talented linemen, and I think his history of injury will limit his impact. I'm really hoping for Kudla or Richardson or someone else to step it up and become a true pass rushing threat because it isn't going to happen with #75.

I don't think Fraser or even Hawk will be 1st team AA, because we like to rotate our linemen and backers quite a bit, and some guys from other defenses play every play. So, it doesn't lead to the individual awards, but it does allow our guys to beat some serious ass in the fourth quarter
Sorry, but you could not be more wrong. Barring injury, Hawk will be a 1st team AA this year. Also, what is this about Hawk and Frasier tailing off at the end of year last year? Hawk was named defensive player of the game in the Fiesta, as well as making just about every "expert's" all-bowl team (like that means anything). Frasier is 6'7", and 275 pounds (minimum). Anyone who thinks he won't at least be all-conference this year is simply ignorant.

Important year for Hawk because he'll be focus of other offenses and because of green line in front of him.

Fraser a lock for all conference ? Dukes, Roth, et al may have something to say about that. Fraser might make 2nd team and at worst honorable mention. I look for David Patterson to be the lineman of note on defense.

Bailey and Johnson were part of a line that set the school record in sacks, then rebroke it 2 years later, and had more sacks their senior years than Fraser has had in 3.

Like I said, FritoBandito, Fraser has yet to play his senior year. Plus, you're giving credit to Bailey and Johnson as "part of a line"...how about some individual stats, Einsteinez? Also, the lack of sacks is not necessarily a solid indicator of overall play at the position.

Bailey and Johnson had 8 and 9 sacks apiece in Senior season

They combined for 17 of the sacks in 2000, the year OSU sets its sack record for a season. And they rank 8 and 5 in all time sacks in school history.

Lookee here: http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/osu/sports/m-footbl/archive/records.pdf

We had some great defensive players and defenses playing in 2000 and 2001. It's too bad they had Bellisari as the team's QB.

You may be proven right, but that's the same thing everyone said about Katzenmoyer the last year he was here, and I don't think he had nearly the year that everyone thought he would, or anywhere near as good as his previous year. Offenses will scheme more for Hawk this year, given his track record, so I personally think the other LBs will be in a position to make more plays, though Hawk will certainly get his share. I stand by my analysis (though I wasn't talking all-conference, just AA)...and I don't think I'm ignorant :wink2:

I see where you're coming from (Bucklion, not Jose Bastardo), but I think the difference is the surrounding cast. Katz had a good defense, but teams schemed solely for him. Offenses will not have that luxury this year, with the LB's we have, there is no way to scheme around Hawk. If they do, they get eaten alive by Capenter, Schlegel, etc. I think a couple teams may try, but when they fail that dismally, nobody else will. Plus, after watching both Katz and Hawk play, Hawk is a shitload better at shedding blocks and making plays. Katz seemed to accept his role of being the defensive focus, and was content simply to be double-teamed. Hawk isn't. Double-team him, and he'll make the play anyways.

So yeah, I'd have to agree with you, you aren't ignorant.

You can use that argument after Fraser has the opportunity to play his senior season.

FKA: I agree with all of that...I think Katz was way to passive his last season, and I don't think Hawk will be. As I said, I think scheming to Hawk will make big years for all the other backers. Hawk is also way better in passing situations IMO, so he could make some noise there, and he is a good spy on the QB too. I said when he got here he was the best recruit we had that season when I saw him the first time because he has such a nose for the ball...I hope the rest of the country sees it that way

How many would he need to make top 10 list of all time for OSU ?

Who gives a shit? I do know that Fraser had 1 sack in 2001, 5 sacks in 2002, and 1.5 sacks last season. While 7.5 sacks in a career isn't all-world, it ain't bad considering he was behind an AA and first-round draft pick during that time. Again, talk after his senior season.

By the way, the .pdf you linked above doesn't include 2003 stats...if you're going to use a reference source to support your argument, at least use current material.

So he needs 10-11 to be in top 10 ?

How many here think #75 will get that many sacks this year ?

PS I'm sorry you actually had to do some research and crunch some numbers on your own (1 + 1.5 + 5 = 7.5). Sorry to burden you Miliani.

Since when are sacks the only statistic that matters for defensive linemen? I think you're argument is sorely lacking, Jose. Personally, I think Fraser could push for 10 sacks this year. Will he get it? Probably not....but how many times will someone else get to the QB because the OL are worried about Simon? Get off your high horse, and quit trying to act like you know anything about Buckeye football.
