Joel Penton honored as college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Ohio State senior defensive tackle was named winner of the 2006 Wuerffel Trophy Wednesday, given annually to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

The award is presented by the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and is named after Danny Wuerffel, Heisman trophy winning quarterback at the University of Florida and NFL veteran who graduated from Fort Walton Beach High School. While being a great college quarterback, Wuerffel is also remembered for his work off the field--including running Desire Street Ministries, faith-based organization for underprivileged kids in New Orleans.

Penton is active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletes in Action and Campus Crusade for Christ, volunteering time to local high school chapters. He also is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a four-year letterwinner on the football field for the Buckeyes, who will face Florida Jan. 8 for the national title.

Penton's speaking engagements number well over 100 and much of his community service work has been done without notice during the past five years. He helped plan the "Main Event" outreach meeting in October, an event that drew more than 13,000 people.
A veteran of 42 games for Ohio State, Penton made four starts as a senior in 2006 for the undefeated Buckeyes and finished the regular season with 17 tackles and two sacks, including one of Michigan quarterback Chad Henne in the second quarter for a 10-yard sack. Penton earned second-team academic all-district honors, as well.

This is awesome, for Joel obviously, and the University as well, but to have such a diverse group of awards add to the recognition of the kids in this Class (Athletic, Academic, & Humanitarian, etc.) speaks to the ever-growing Legend of the recruiting class of 2002.

What an incredible chapter in the History of this University we've witnessed over the last 5 years!

Congrats to Joel, his family, the Team and University. You've represented The Ohio State University well, and we appreciate your "off the field" representation as much as what you've accomplished on the field.

[FONT=ARIAL, SANS SERIF] Too often the sports pages have become an extension of the police blotter.

In fact, this morning, there is a story in this very paper about another Cincinnati Bengal being arrested.

This time, its Jonathan Joseph being picked up on possession of marijuana.

News like this overshadows the good in sports.

Former Van Wert football player Joel Penton is one of the good guys.

Commitment the name of the game for Penton

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]As Joel Penton sat in the audience at the banquet where the Fellowship of Christian Athletes? Bobby Bowden Award was presented earlier this year, he got the idea he wouldn?t be taking home the award when the presenter, Bowden himself, mentioned the other two nominees by name but couldn?t remember his name.
Wednesday night, he was back where name recognition is no problem when he spoke at The Lima News Scholar-Athlete banquet at OSU-Lima.
Penton, an Ohio State football player the last five seasons, was The Lima News 2002 male Scholar-Athlete of the Year when he was a senior at Van Wert High School.
He played the last four years for OSU after being a redshirt freshman on the 2002 national championship team.

Former OSU player to speak

BUCYRUS -- Last fall, Joel Penton was a powerful defensive tackle for the Big Ten champion Ohio State football team, but today he is even more powerful as a speaker. Penton, community director for the Central Ohio Fellowship of Christian Athletes, has made 100-plus appearances at churches, schools and civic organizations this year.

Taking a stand sometimes can mean standing alone
By Jill Gosche, [email protected] POSTED: September 26, 2007

Sometimes, a man must get lost before he can find his way.

Take Joel Penton, for example.

Penton?s high school friends intentionally sped away from him when he refused to subscribe to their lifestyle, and his peers booed him when he was crowned homecoming king for raising the most money for charity.

But, the kid from Van Wert stuck to commitments he had made, became a defensive tackle for Ohio State University?s football team and graduated from college.

Penton said he never dreamed about playing football for Ohio State. But, he did dream about keeping his commitments.

?I did that, and some amazing things happened,? he said.

Penton ? who now is the community director for Central Ohio Fellowship of Christian Athletes ? encouraged Columbian High School students during an assembly Wednesday afternoon to make commitments and not back down.
