Joel Penton spoke to my high school today.
Damn, this guy's inspirational! Made me feel dumb about my
decisions on sex and drinking lol. He seems really mature and
though he's Christian, he didn't push it, unlike most of the speakers
my ultra-conservative school pushes on us. I really enjoyed him,
kept the card of him sacking Henne (Seems to be a staple of his
talks), it's in my locker.

He talked about his high school group of friends were totally committed to not-drinking, since 8th grade, and how one day his junior year one of these kids went out and drank, and got another to, and before long he was the ONLY one not drinking friday and saturday nights. He was like, damn I should be doin' that. but he said like, he refused, and he'd been away from "the guys" for about a month, what with wrestling and etc.
So he knew they were hanging out one night, and he drove his mom's Buick over there. And the guys agreed to drive over to their friend's house, and he offered to take about 1/2 of them, instead of making all 7 cram into one car. They refused, he's like w/e I'll see yall there. And he got there, and no one came. He didn't have a cell and thought they musta changed their minds, and found 'em somewhere else. And he saw 'em in the window, knocked, but the bro answered. He tried to walk in, but the guy wouldn't let him. Apparently, "the guys" weren't there. He went home and was like, whoa.
Then the whole student body hated him. His homecoming king was decided on he who sold the most for fundraiser, and he did, and won. And the crowd boo'ed. And his friends said, let us see you take one drink, and it's done, we'll call it off. but he wouldn't, and he said it made it worth it when he saw Tressell walk in with a scholarship offer.

Then he talked about his refusal on sex, and how the first time he kissed his now-wife was on their wedding day.

Very, very inspirational.

Former Buckeye inspires students

BUCYRUS -- Bucyrus High School freshman Keith Bryden is impressed with former Joel Penton, a former Ohio State University defensive lineman.

"I am a member of Teen Institute so listening to what he has to say is really helpful. He shows us that you can play football, or anything else you want to do, and still lead a positive life instead of being someone who uses drugs or just eeks their way through life," Bryden said.

Bryden's classmate and fellow Teen Institute member Alan Hedrick agrees.

"I think it's pretty cool that he has taken the time to come and talk to us. He gives us inspiration to go for our goals," Hedrick said of Penton, who came to Bucyrus High School to speak to student leaders, student body and the community at various times Thursday.
Penton's message is about commitment.

"I am telling kids about how to stand their ground. To not just make commitments, but to follow through with them. I want to inspire people to live a positive life," Penton said.

The main speaker for the event was former Ohio State University football player Joel Penton, who helped lead the Buckeyes to three Big Ten championships and a National Championship before he graduated in 2006.

Penton won the Danny Wuerffel Trophy, or the "Humanitarian Heisman," which recognizes the nation's football player who combines academic and athletic achievement and also achievements in community service.

He shared his enthusiasm for helping others with the crowd of students and local officials.

"I want to encourage you to live a life of significance. Take every opportunity and do something significant," Penton said.

Penton said there are three ways to live a life of significance -- passion, persistence and perspective.

He used his experiences playing football to prove his points.

"As I grew older, the passion for football translated into other things in life," he said. "There's a lot of people who just live their lives on the sidelines."

With persistence, he said people can accomplish their wildest dreams.

The last portion was about perspective, or having the right perspective in order to make a difference.

"You have to remember that you are one and that you can't do everything, but you can do something," he said. "We have to know that one can make a difference."

Penton to speak at County Line
The Ohio State University alumnus Joel Penton will bring the message this Sunday, March 1 at County Line Church of the Brethren. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome. Joel travels the nation bringing the Gospel of Christ to schools, churches, and gatherings of youth for the Central Ohio Fellowship for Christian Athletes.

Joel was born and raised in Van Wert; he and his wife now reside in Columbus

During his five years playing football for OSU Joel was recognized for both his athletic and academic achievement. He received the prestigious Danny Wuerffel Trophy, also known as the "Humanitarian Heisman". It is a national award that recognizes ONE college football player in the entire country who best combines outstanding community service with athletic and academic achievement.

LUCAS -- Joel Penton performed before crowds of 100,000 as a football player at The Ohio State University.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m. he'll be in a far more intimate setting -- Lucas Middle School's gymnasium.

Penton will share his testimony about what life was like before and what it's been like after becoming a Christian. Singer and musician Ryan Holliday will perform during the event.

Penton became a Christian in ninth grade at Van Wert High School.

"I was attending a youth Bible study with my church and I am sure I heard the gospel in the past but it felt like the first time I really heard a clear gospel message of about Christ's life, death," Penton said. "I became a Christian. It's given me new life."

On Thursday, Penton spoke to Lucas High School students about his career with the Buckeyes, and offered an invitation to this week's program. The football player-turned-motivational speaker, addressing the school on National Day of Prayer, titled his speech, "Stand Your Ground."

"Nobody ever seems to come up to me and say it seems like so much fun to wake up every morning at 6 a.m. and run until you have to throw up. And man, it looks like fun to go to class for several hours and then come back to go to practice for a couple hours, watch film for a couple hours, lift weights for a couple hours and then go back to class in the evening for what used to be your free time," Penton said. "And man this looks like fun to not be able to schedule a vacation in the summertime because you go to class and you practice all day long."

"It takes a lot of commitment, someone having the willingness, the ability to make the right commitments, but probably more importantly, someone to keep those commitments,'' he ton said.

Penton was joined by musician Ryan Holiday as the duo have teamed up to travel across the midwest on their year-long "Stand Your Ground" tour. Penton graduated from O.S.U in 2006 and was a member of three Big Ten Championship teams and one National Championship team with the Buckeyes.

EAST LIVERPOOL - Sponsored by NewLife Technical Institute, former Ohio State Buckeye defensive tackle Joel Penton will speak 7 p.m. July 22 at Hope Christian Fellowship, state Route 7.

The event also will feature music by the Christian band "Awake the Dawn."

Penton will share his own inspirational testimony and challenge teens and young adults to "Stand Your Ground."

A 2006 graduate of OSU, Penton was a member of three Big Ten championship teams and one national championship team. He played in 38 straight games for the Buckeyes. In his senior year, he recorded a sack in the 2006 victory over Michigan which gave Ohio State their first outright Big Ten Championship since 1984.

In 2006 Penton received the Danny Wuerffel Trophy, also known as the "Humanitarian Heisman." The trophy recognizes the nation's college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Penton was a four-time varsity letterwinner as well as a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He was also chosen to play in the 2007 Hula Bowl, one of the premier college football all-star games.

Penton currently is the Community Director for the Central Ohio Fellowship of Christian Athletes and frequently travels the country as a full-time speaker.

"I'm excited to share what has helped make me a winner on and off the field," said Penton.

Speaker encourages students to stand their ground

Motivational speaker Joel Penton addresses students at Southmont High School, urging them to make good decisions and keep the commitments they make to themselves.

Not every high school student will grow up to become a lauded college football player or a popular musician.

But, according to Joel Penton, a motivational speaker, the choices students make now could have a monstrous impact on their future success.

The key, said Penton, who spoke at Southmont High School to three different ages of students Monday, is to keep the commitments you make. It's advice Penton gives from personal experience, as the decision to refrain from drugs and alcohol in high school allowed him to earn a scholarship to Ohio State University, where he played as a defensive tackle for 38-straight games with the Buckeyes. In his senior year, Penton recorded a sack in the 2006 victory over Michigan, which gave Ohio State its first Outright Big Ten Championship since 1984.

Although he was offered the opportunity to play in the NFL after graduating in 2006, Penton said he believed he would have a larger impact in front of young people as opposed to on the field.

Now, when Penton puts on his Championship ring every morning, he doesn't think about being ostracized by his high school friends for snubbing alcohol. He doesn't think about being booed by the whole student body after winning winter homecoming king, a title he earned for raising the most money for charity. He doesn't think about the hard work or the sacrifices he made to live out his lifelong dream on the football field.

What he thinks about, he told students, is how grateful he is that he kept his commitment to himself to become the best football player he could be.

"You have to stand your ground and keep your commitments," Penton said, a message laced with personal anecdotes and humor. "Sometimes," he said seriously, "you're going to have to stand alone."

CHILLICOTHE -- Joel Penton poked fun at the Michigan Wolverines and several members of the audience during an assembly Monday at Chillicothe High School, but the message he hoped to impart to the CHS students was anything but a joke.

The former Ohio State University Buckeyes' defensive lineman now is a motivational speaker who visits schools across the country teaching young people about the importance of not just making commitments, but keeping them.

Penton's mix of humor, football talk and life lessons was well-received by the CHS students. He was there to help kick off a week of fundraising activities that will culminate Friday with the Cavalier football team hosting Jackson in one of the games of the Spielman Gridiron Classic.
