Disgusting ESPN/High School Story

I heard on the radio this morning that Butkus and his sidekick left the team with two games to go. I guess they did not "quit" because they fulfilled their contract with ESPN. Of course, the contract ended before the season ended. Nice job, jackasses!!!

Who the hell takes over?

I've watched the show and they have seemed to whip the kids into shape.

I believe Ray Crockett is his assistant.

That really puts Butkus in a bad light in my eyes b/c he's one of my favorite players of all time.

For new equipment, new score board, money, money, and money... why not give it a shot... as long as the kids aren't belittled on national TV, I don't see much harm... heck some of the kids are prob. excited to meet Butkus, and be on tv...

With so many schools charging kids to play due to budget cuts... this will at a min. help provide for the kids for years to come...

Last I checked folks weren't in an uproar over massillon’s movie of one of their seasons.... I think the problem is the fact we all despise ESPiN...
one, you can be sure that tension and embarrassment will be highlighted, its a staple of reality TV nowadays.

I'm not familiar with the massillon movie. Did it involve bringing in a second co-coach who is extremely harsh and has zero coaching experience? That right there is the reason the show should never have been done.

How surprising that another EOE show falls short.

The movie about Massillon is called 'Go Tigers'...and as a big fan of Ohio High School football, there were parts in the movie that I found quite disturbing...especially the preceived glorification of drinking and driving after a game night party and the players attitudes towards education and school in general.

fair enough, but that sounds like a realistic HS football experience that maybe should not have been idealized. Was there anything staged tho in the movie? If Butkus was not involved, my view towards this series would have been a lot different.

I've never seen the show and have not read any recent articles about it. I'm just going by what the radio guys said. They said the true head coach of the team is the guy that was hired by the school over the winter. It sounds like he is still there.

Guess they can say they got improved facilities from this.

Butkus leaves Montour

'Head coach' said he fulfilled contract for reality television show

Tuesday, October 11, 2005
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Dick Butkus chided Montour football players for poor attitudes, right on national television. He questioned their heart on ESPN's weekly reality show "Bound For Glory."
Then Montour's pseudo head coach bailed on the team with two games left in the season.
Butkus left Saturday, one day after Montour's record dropped to 1-6 with a 34-3 loss at New Castle. Butkus, an Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker, told the team Thursday he was leaving. He told Montour's "real" head coach he was leaving because he had fulfilled his contract for the show.
Lou Cerro was hired as Montour's head coach this past winter. But Butkus was installed as head coach when ESPN picked Montour to be the subject of a weekly reality show at 10 p.m. Tuesdays. The show has aired three times and has five more episodes.
"He basically told me two weeks ago that he was going to be out of here," Cerro said. "He said he was contracted to work only eight weeks."
Also gone is Montour assistant coach Ray Crockett, a former Denver Broncos defensive back who was brought in by the show's producers to help Butkus coach. But through it all, Cerro remained the coach in charge.
Montour has two regular-season games remaining and is out of WPIAL playoff contention. Cerro said only one camera will be at practices and games the final two weeks. Until now, there were six or seven cameras around.
"They're telling us that to do the final two weeks of the season would cost them between $1.5 million and $2 million," Cerro said.
Montour senior quarterback Nick DiIanni didn't mind having Butkus as "coach."
"I thought he was very motivating with the speeches he gave," DiIanni said.
But DiIanni also said the show is misleading.
"Some of the stuff isn't too real, but I guess that's how shows are," DiIanni said.
The show portrayed Butkus as the "real" coach and rarely showed Cerro. Butkus also was highly critical of players on the show.
Montour senior linebacker Morgan Singletary was a little miffed by Butkus at times.
"I understood most of the stuff he was saying," Singletary said. "But at times, it was awkward the way he would yell at us. He wouldn't really talk to us at all during practice, then he'd come out and start yelling at us at the end. That was awkward.
"If I had my choice, I probably would not want to do this again. I met a lot of cool people, but I would've just rather had coach Cerro. I think it would've been a lot of fun, with or without cameras. Without cameras, there would've been a lot less problems."
Cerro said Butkus told him he would be back next Friday for Montour's final regular-season game at West Allegheny. While in town since August, Butkus lived in a trailer park in Harmony and a smaller trailer at the school.
"He said he hasn't seen his wife since April," Cerro said.
"Maybe this will bring some sanity back to the whole program. The kids know no one is here now but me and the rest of the coaches. They're not going to have to worry about television interview times or things like that."
Cerro is not bitter about the whole experience.
"At times it was a distraction, but I went with the flow and just tried to make it work for the school and the kids," he said.

No, nothing was staged in that movie (to the best of my knowledge)...it was an all access documentary that foccused on three or four seniors on the football team. If you rent the DVD there is some excellent extra stuff including an interview the Chris Speillman talking about football in Massillon and what it was like growing up there...and comparing how the experience helped prepare him for life at OSU and the NFL...

the producers of the movie lucked out that year because Massillon went 10-0 and qualified for the playoffs...and they really did a good job explaining the tradition of the Massillon v. McKinley rivalry.

I reccomend the movie...while parts of it can make you shake your head, the movie gets at the heart of the importance of what Ohio high school football is all about.

Wow...that is sad. This kid's senior year in high school, probably his last year playing football, and he had to put up with this shit. I feel bad for all the seniors because they'll look back and remember how ESPN ruined their final year by bringing in a guy that was only there to act like a head coach and yell at the kids for the cameras.

I hope they kick the shit out of their final two opponents and show ESPN what a joke this whole thing was.

I never saw this either, but if it's true that Butkus bailed before the season was over just because the 'show' was over, I've lost a lot of respect for him.

Just another example of so called "reality TV" going down the crapper (where it belongs)

Not going to happen... I live in the area and the last 2 oppents, specifically West Allegheny with Dorin Dickerson are going to mop the floor with them to be honest. I feel horrible for the kids, and the image they tried to set of the area is a joke.

But ESPN is not soley to blame here, the school let them in. The could have said no but for some $$ ( that is not needed in a lot of schools around the area) they sold their kids out. It is a big joke around here and I even seen other kids taunting Montour player at the local mall (Robinson) because of the show. Sad all the way around.
