Disgraced Former Penn State DC Jerry Sandusky (convicted child molester)

And he says that he didn't realize that he was on the Second Mile advisory board until yesterday.

I wonder how many other honorary names on the board have no idea they are there. I wouldn't be surprised at all if a number of them are fielding calls wondering "Second what now? What the hell are you talking about?!".

In what sort of society does a grown man witness a heinous crime, consult with his father about what to do, and the two of them determine that the appropriate course of action is to notify the head football coach of the local state university?

That is the root of this problem.

I've been turning this around in my head for the past day or two, and the more I think about it, the more I believe McQueary's actions (or more properly, inactions) are less of an indictment on society as a whole and much more of an indictment of the atmosphere of control JoePa created at PSU.

Mike McQueary is as much a product of the insular microcosm of Happy Valley and moreso the PSU football program than perhaps anyone. It appears clear that McQ and his father thought the matter was more about 'how will JoePa want to handle this' rather than what should they do to protect that boy (or perhaps 'yet another boy').

Also, for those decrying the BoT decision to fire Blind Eye Joe, I think they are delusional to think he wasn't the ultimate authority in the athletic department (especially in '02). He 'passed it up the chain of command' is a ludicrous justification for absolving him.

Now I don't know all of the details about "second mile", but is it just me or is it starting look fishy in how it was operated? Those "board members" my guess could be those who spoke or has donated to the charity? Seems like a lot of lies coming from this organization. Idk, could be a secluded name with Lou, or it could be the beginning of even more bad news.

Possibly the worst question ever asked on ESPiN's coverage last night...Matt Millen was emotionally talking about his own kids and grandkids, how heinous the whole thing is, how bad he feels for the victims and how crappy we are as a society if we can't protect children, all the stuff one would hope he would be saying...then the doofus ESPN anchor immediately asks: "So, have you talked to Jerry Sandusky in the last day or so?" WTF? :shake:

ESPN: Did you enjoy the play Mrs. Lincoln?

The isolated nature of the power in State College, and their reluctance to disclose information, have been symptoms of that problem.

Remember their reluctance to satisfy the FOIA requests a few years ago regarding JoePa's compensation? It was a simple request to have the actual salary and other remuneration of the most prominent person at a state university, and they fought for a long time before releasing his salary. And I still believe that they didn't disclose all of the money from TV, shoe companies, etc. They wanted to perpetuate a myth that he made very little money while being very generous toward the University Library, etc., rather than be forthright about the pay received by the most prominent person at a public institution.

It's a very minor issue at this point, but I'm still waiting to see a full list of his compensation.

If you look at the number of famous athletes and coaches on the honorary board list, it's easy to conclude that a number of these people were just one-time keynotes for an event.

Look at the list Muck posted earlier today (10:07 AM):

John R. Cappelletti - Retired PSU & NFL Football Player, Heisman Trophy Winner
R. R. M. Carpenter, III - Former Owner, Philadelphia Phillies
James E. Ford - Retired Vice President, Kmart
William A. Gettig - President, Gettig Technologies, Inc.
Jack Ham - Retired NFL Player, Pittsburgh Steelers, Hall of Fame
Franco Harris - Retired NFL Player, Pittsburgh Steelers, Hall of Fame
Lou Holtz - Retired Football Coach, Sportscaster, and Motivational Speaker
Dr. Bryce Jordan - Retired, Penn State University President
Willi Maier - President, Omni Plastics, Inc.
Matt Millen - ESPN Football Analyst
Arnold D. Palmer - President, Arnold Palmer Enterprises
Joseph V. Paterno - Head Football Coach, Penn State University
Andy Reid - Head Football Coach, Philadelphia Eagles
Dr. John Reidell - General Surgeon, Past Second Mile Board President
Dominic Toscani - Owner & President, Paris Business Forms

Mark Wahlberg - Actor, Rapper, and Film & TV Producer
Verne Willaman - Retired Chairman and President, Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp.
Quentin Wood - Retired Chairman and CEO, Quaker State Oil Refining Corp.
Richard A. Zimmerman - Retired Chairman of the Board, Hershey Foods

and compare it to the web site right now (2:21 PM):

Both Holtz and Paterno's names have been removed.

Look for a flurry of retractions as all these other athletes and CEOs are contacted by reporters inquiring into their role at Second Mile.

This is fiction, but my wife brought up that Freddy Krueger was burned for what he did with kids.

That would be a pretty apt punishment if the allegations against Jerry Sandusky are true.

I have told several people that I would be fine with Sandusky and his ilk serving only 1-month for such crimes; as long as that month was served in an incinerator. (Though scaphism does seem an apt punishment if it could be made to last a month)

Small town America can be exactly that kind of society, if one person or oligarchy has too much power.

That's what I mean. If they lied about as something stupid as the "board members", that whole organization as far as I'm concerned is going to be full of lies.

So What Happens Now?

Short term of course there are criminal indictments for Sandusky (and maybe an "obstruction of justice"/type charge for others?). And certainly, a host of plaintiff's attorneys are trolling State College already.

But longer term, can you imagine the damage this will do to enrollment, funding for endowments, recruiting and overall "goodwill" of the university?

All deserved, but I find it completely ironic that what JO PA was given credit for building for over 45 years could all be brought down by a systemic arrogant attitude to keep any problems under wraps and inside their football complex. No wonder why Sandusky took the boys there.

Even Shakespeare couldn't write this stuff.

More dispicable than sad....but sad nonetheless.
