Discussion of Frank Miller's 300 *Spoilers*

Good movie though I wasn't liking it much until the last few scenes. 8/10.

EDIT-Upon further review, I'm bumping this down to a 7/10 due to no climax or build up.

Now, you may be asking yourself, "why the hell is he re-rating a movie a day later at 1:35 am?" And to that I say, "why are you asking so many damn questions?". Good night, BP.

As far as the creatures go, I was willing to allow myself the hunchback and possibly the giant, with exagerations, but the guy with crab arms lost me.

I thought it was a cool movie, but I wish it would have been more historically accurate and more realistic to be taken seriously. It was fun to watch, but it wasn't a movie like Gladiator where you left feeling like you saw a classic movie, and left with more knowledge of an ancient civilization than what you went in with.

However, the background info with how they trained the boys to be soldiers was pretty cool. They kind of ruined the whole "badass" image of King Leonidas when he turned out to be a smartass with a sensitive side. I'm not saying that they weren't some BAMF's, but I don't see those Spartan soliders being that loose and joking around, when in reality they were probably twisted pychos deranged from years of abuse and violence.

I know how you feel. The wife and I went and saw it yesterday (watch 300 right before MSU takes on UNC... didn't help the team any, apparently ).

I enjoyed the movie, and had fun picking at the inaccuracies. Many of them I can understand--see why the authors did what they did. Think how bored your average moviegoer would be if the Spartans stayed behind their shield wall until the bitter end? Think there'd be some snoring going on?

You're right. The freaks were kind of hard to place as a 'useful' addition. The only thing I could come up with was the attempt to get the viewer to expand the conflict from Sparta vs Persia to Good vs Evil, and nothing says "Evil" like freaks. I got out of the theater and laughed my ass off, thinking of their portrayal of Xerxes.

Probably one of my favorite moments in the movie is the very end, with the sight of the Spartan army in battle array. That would be seriously bowel-loosening for any opponent.

Oh, and the wifey wasn't even too bored. She covered her eyes less than she did during "hostel," and ranked it as less of a bore than your typical football movie (I know, I know... I'm working on it).

Wow, tough critics... I just saw this movie tonight and that it was awesome! However, I wasn't going into it expecting to get a historically correct representation of the Spartans, rather I expected to see what it was exactly... a graphic novel made into a movie, and it turned out to be a great action movie. All in all I give this one a 9/10.

300 had some great action scenes, the fast/slow spin attacks were interesting. I wasn't expecting much else, and they certainly didn't provide it.

The speeches were pretty lousy, save the queen's to the counsel. I assume they were staying true to the graphic novel text, but they were weak.

300 also stole a lot from other movies. Hunchback (gollum), gladiator phrases & scenes (too many to count), etc.

What a useless breach from reality.
Wouldn't a diseased brute with a huge blade and cloak accomplish the same thing, without forcing the viewer to stray so far from the real world?

I think you might be missing a point of the movie here. It depicts how this story would have been told from age to age. The movie is a first person narration of the events of the Battle of Thermopylae.

As this tale gets told, one can expect exaggerations to occur. (i.e. the size of the Persian fighting force, the size of the Rhino and elephant, etc....)
