Anyone had any luck getting a better "deal" by calling up DirecTV? I have been a customer for just under 5 years now, and I keep seeing all these sign up deals they have. I want in. Any suggestions?

Call cable company and Dish Network. Get their best offer and then call DTV. Tell them you are going to switch because of their promo. They'll offer $20 credit for x months. If that's not good enough, go to their retention department and see what they'll do to switch.

I have found that if you're on a lower tier plan, they'll call you so often to get their Everything plan at a great rate. But if you keep a higher plan they don't initiate those offers for you.

compare providers, call directv, and tell them that you will change to x unless they not only give you a comparable deal but a better deal. if you come with research and a desire to move, then you can get things done. if the response doesn't satisfy you, don't threaten to cancel... just tell the rep that you want to cancel immediately. your offers will be better. you should get a bunch of freebies and a reduced rate.

Had DirecTV for 3 years as it was the only way I could get BTN where we were living at the time (CO). Moved to KY and continued with DirecTV due to contract requirements. Had pretty bad service from them while in KY. Finally bought a HDTV and found out that the receiver I had that was supposed to be free HD for life as part of my original contract was not HD. Called them up and asked WTF and was told they would give me an HD receiver but it would cost me $50 even though I should have already had it for free. Told them no way and I wanted to talk to someone higher up the food chain. Was told the same by them. Told them if that was the best they could do I was switching to Dish. They basically told me go for it. I switched to Dish that day and have been more that happy with the quality of service/equipment over DirecTV. Got a call from someone at DirecTV about a week after I switched wanting to know why we dropped them. Told them the story, woman was appalled and apologetic but didn't really offer me anything that would entice me to go back to DirecTV.

Anyone here's remote control drive them insane?

I ordered a new one and about a week after I got it, it worked about half the time. It will go on little spurts of working good and then other times, I'll hit the #2 6 times and nothing, when I go to hit chanell 4, I get 4444.

Anyone else get driven batty by this?

You may need to update the firmware in your converter box (if you are using one). I don't have Direct TV, but had a similar problem with a Blu-Ray player where the remote seemed to not work half the time, and then you would get the lag catch up (like your 2 and 4 issue). Firmware update took care of the problem.

Have you asked for a new box? Maybe the remotes have been fine and the IR receiver in the box is toast.

Does direct control of the volume level at the TV work from the remote(s)?

Tired of your DVR constantly running and making noise?
Put it on a music channel when not watching TV. This will, in theory, save usage of your harddrive.
Your DVR is programmed to always have new TV material recorded so it's constantly updating things like PPV movies and your programmed TV shows.

Came home to a "771 - Searching for satellite" error while I was tuned to H2 (channel 271). Hitting the Info button told me that there's no signal to "Satellite In 2". Problem is, there's never been a cable connected to the Satellite In 2 input--I haven't touched jack shit--and this is the first time I've ever had this error. About half the channels tune in perfectly, but the other half give me that error. It's too late in the evening to fuck with an automated system that will just frustrate the fuck out of me, so maybe I'll call them up tomorrow bright and early. If anyone has had this problem, please let me know what you did to resolve it...
