I'm on Week 3 day 2 of the Tapout XT; I've lost 7 pounds, 1.5 inches of my waist and two inches off of my stomach and I wasn't big to begin with, just out of shape. Granted I haven't worked out for give or take 10 years, so I anticipated a quick rush of results because I jumped into a decently tough workout routine. It's a 90 day program total. I think I am getting more toned up than I am gaining strength but I am pleased with the results and "shaping up" I am seeing.

As for the diet, Tapout XT came with a program but I am going a different route. My doctor says that I need to stop "living to eat and start eating to live" which rings true because I love me some food. What my wife and I are doing is using the MyFitnessPal app for Android and iOS to keep track of our daily intake and staying within a Calories and Fat Gram number while ensuring proper protein. That app has really opened my eyes to how bad our diet has been. We've cut out all fried foods and I used to drink 2-3 cans of Pepsi every day, now I drink 1 or 2 per week.

This has been a pretty big shakeup to our routines but so far so good.
Just about the halfway point of the program...

Down 17 pounds
5 inches off the stomach
2 inches off the waist, almost fitting into my pants from my early twenties

I feel really good and my strength has come along much better than I anticipated. I am very happy with the results so far.

That's great. Ever since I started micromanaging my diet my results have been amazing. I've lost around my waist without losing any significant muscle, I feel stronger, I recover much better and my skin even has a healthier glow to it. I'm cycling carbs like Powerlifter suggested and it's worked very well for me, the day afterward I feel like superman.

The Controversial Science of Sports Drinks - The Atlantic
The British Medical Journal published a scathing investigation yesterday into the influence of the sports drink industry over academia, in the interest of marketing the science of hydration. The lengthy piece by Deborah Cohen documents how, over the past several decades, mandates regarding the necessity of hydrating during exercise entered the public consciousness to the point that they're now thought of as common sense. Here are some highlights:

-The key players: Pepsico, which produces Gatorade, the Coca-Cola company, which owns Powerade (the official sports drink of the Olympics), and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which makes the British sports drink Lucozade.

-Before the hype: The first New York marathon, in 1970, inspired a new interest in running. At the time, however, little scientific attention was played to the role of hydration in runners' performance. Throughout the 1970s, in fact, "marathon runners were discouraged from drinking fluids for fear that it would slow them down."

-Undermining the body's signals: Cohen claims that one of the greatest accomplishments of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, established in 1985, was to convince the public that thirst is an unreliable indicator of dehydration. There is ample evidence of ways in which the experts who propagated this information were funded or "supported" by sports drinks companies, and while this in itself isn't necessarily wrong, she argues that researchers who have conflicts of interest are not objective enough to be writing guidelines, as is the case here. There is no good evidence to support the ideas, for example, that "Without realizing, you may not be drinking enough to restore your fluid balance after working out" (Powerade), or that urine color is a reliable indicator of the body's hydration levels.

I have a question for you about your diet. Do you have very strict meals or do you just have a target for protein intake? Then assuming you're under your calorie target for the day you make up the balance with whatever?

I get my protein and veggies and with whatever calories I have left I go with fruit

My daughter and I went to the Y to workout last night and while there we got talked into taking a S&C class. All I have to say is holy shit what a workout! It was great to be jogged out of my standard workout and do and learn some new things. I have some inner ear balance issues, so a few things were difficult for me to do from a balance perspective, but very happy I decided to try it.
