Diet-Fitness-General Wellness Your Thoughts?

Do you guys all do grass fed beef ? Does that make a big difference or is it simply a more holistic, complete approach ? I don't mind shopping for good meat and produce, but I have trouble paying twice as much for the same stuff.
I buy 'clean' poultry 100% of the time. It's not that much more expensive and is widely available.

I'd say I'm 50/50 on beef, based on availability, not cost. If you cannot get (or regularly afford) grass fed beef, the compromise is to look for the grass finished.

Don't buy cheap beef. Those poor things stand ankle deep in manure and are fed ground-up dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, and shit (literally!) from poultry houses.

As a farmer I invite you to rethink your statements about cheap beef. There are plentry of viable grainfed sources out there. As far as grassfed vs grainfed healthwise. You obviously want grassfed as much as possible to get a better omega 3/6 ratio. Poultry too, but I find it hard to verify if the poultry was bug fed, or grain fed and just let to run around in a pasture. The easiest solution is eat the right fish and take Omega 3 supplements. This is the best way to keep your 3/6 ratio in check. If you can find and afford grassfed beef, lamb etc. they are definately a better choice, but don't be afraid of the alternative.

About a week into the paleo diet, down about 5 lbs, mostly water from the internal storage changes, but I am very optimistic.

Most diets require tortuous changes and denials. The cravings are so much duller and less frequent now that I've cut way back on carbs in favor of rich, natural foods high in protein and fat.

Grains and carbs really do make responsible dieting so much harder. They are going to be badly missed, but the trade off is worth it.

Parents buy half a cow at a time, so thankfully I get to enjoy grass fed beef for the most part. Grass fed beef has a much better fatty acid profile and is much higher in omega 3's. Comparable to wild salmon.

Good work. I am 7 months into a primal lifestyle and went 225 to 170. I will never go back.

I binged on Pizza one weekend and I felt like I ate a bowling ball. I then promptly took an hour nap. Yuck.

I have drank a lot of beer a couple of weekends. (and will do a lot more in the fall on saturdays) I didn't notice such an effect as i did with the Pizza, but once you change you won't want to go back, and if you do your body will make you remember why you left. Keep up the good work.

Here's an article that talks about some of the benefits of grass-fed. It's more than just marbling and taste. Yes, it is pricier. You just have to decide if the additional benefits are worthwhile and worth the cost.

I should note that I have a local cattle rancher that offers grass-fed only Longhorns. It's the only way that he provides his meat to the public. I enjoyed the foot even with the lower fat content. I would have to consume it more regularly to get the additional benefits. I don't know if I'm there on the added cost yet or not.

I recently switched over to the grass-fed beef. It definitely appears to be a leaner cut. There is not near as much marbling in the meat as compared to grain-fed beef. The difference in taste was noticeable. It was not a bad taste by any means, just different than that of the grain-fed beef. The only time I really buy beef anymore is when I buy steak. If I am buying ground red meat, I buy bison. Bison burgers are delicious.

Agreed.

Not quite. 6/3 ratio for the following.

Grassfed is about 1.64
Grainfed is about 4.84
Wild Salmon is about .21

Thanks I'm fairly new to this. I love Costco as it offers a lot of organic and/or natural ingredient based food in bulk, but they only had one grainfed beef option, which were small chunks in fancy packaging. I will look for some additional buying options.

Where to Columbus residents get their grass fed meat ?

With a good sized freezer, you can buy in bulk directly from the farmer. It does require a lot of storage and some up front cost, but you are stocked up for quite a while if you are only eating beef once or twice a week.

You can find local organic, grass-fed farmers here: http://www.eatwild.com/

Another option, if a whole cow (or even a half) requires too much space/money, is to get with other folks that are interested and divide the cow among yourselves.

There may be more humane options, but without any sort of control to know where the grainfed beef has come from, I don't know what I'm buying, or whether I'm buying it from IBP, Cargill, ConAgra, or ADM. The packages I'm talking about are the ones that usually have two labels:

1) USDA Grain Fed
2) Product of USA, Canada, and Mexico

No thanks.

I'm going on a low carb experiment for a week just to see how it will affect my weight, my energy and whatnot. I'm going to limit my carb intake to fruit and starchy vegetables and whatever I get through eating almonds or low cal gatorade. I'm not going to eat any potatoes, rice, pasta, bread or any other grains. My fitness routine will remain the same, only the diet will be different. Yesterday I weighed 179 in the morning although it's a bit misleading since the night before I'd indulged in pizza, a few ales and some Dots with my movie. Yesterday I ate about 7 eggs, 4 ozs of chicken, a 1/4 lbs of spinach, 2ozs of cheese, a half an avocado, about a 1/2 cup of almonds and a half cup of a tomato based salsa plus two 32 oz bottles of low-cal gatorade. This morning I checked in at 175 1/2 lbs.

On Tuesday, I ripped a section of skin off of both of my big toes. First time that has happened since sprinting in my Vibram's. So... the wife and I decided that we would purchase bikes that would could ride as a family. I took this consideration and ran with something that I had read of Dryden's some time ago, and I bought the following:

http://www.norco.com/bikes/urban/suit/heart/

It's a single speed bike. I don't kwow when/if that I'll do it, but I can turn around the rear wheel and it becomes a fixed wheel as well. Thus far, we've cruised around as a family, but I've also sprinted on this bike for a good 10-15 seconds. Winds the shit out me. Glad to know I have another option for all out exercise when needed. At present, I'm debating on whether I want to start riding it to/from work which is about 7 miles one way. Problem isn't so much the exercise as it is toting the work clothes and other items on my back the whole time. I'll probably try it and see.

Are you shooting for ketosis?
