Diet-Fitness-General Wellness Your Thoughts?

I think I need to move back to Utah and start hiking again. Nothing has ever made me healthier faster than that. Well, that is, once I learned to rehydrate and rest before driving down the mountain so my blood cells didn't all collapse and stuff.

I'm out there almost every morning/night, there's tons of trails where I live.

I really miss the trails. Felt like a total pathetic wimp the first couple of trips, and then started breezing by points that had just about killed me the week before. By the time I left, I'd do four hours on a steep uphill route and then meander back over another few hours. Great for a change of scenery and to make up for not getting out much during the week. There isn't anything as pleasant around here, and nowhere I've found where there are enough people out to feel safe going by myself.

I may have to go check them out, how are they for rocky ground? How do they grip smooth surfaces?

Depends on the size of the rocks and the shapes. When I was in Monterrey, the cobblestone streets gave my feet a massage in them. I've worn them on paths and river rock. Nothing has ever been too much, but it all depends on personal comfort. The sole is rubber and grabs smooth surfaces just fine.

The first time I did Squaw Peak I about died halfway up, this was about 7 years ago. Now I can go up and down 4 times, no problem. I've met a lot of really nice people out there too. I'd never really thought of how a woman might feel being out there alone but I guess you can't be too careful. Most of the trails around here have enough people on them during the cool times of the day that I wouldn't think it would be too much of a problem running into creeps. Pepper spray would probably be a good idea for a lone woman.

I've moved from chair to exercise ball to a standing computer area now. Gradually gotten much better each time. If I could only wear my Vibrams to work, then it'd be solid.

I would not recommend wearing them if you are working on a ladder. I was out working in the garden over the weekend and decided to clean out the gutters.....my foot was killing me yesterday.

They're great. Went out hiking (as much as you can really "hike" in Central Ohio....happy, AKAK?) about a month ago and they did fine on all surfaces, even wet rocks.

How do they cushion? Can you go on an extended run or hike without your ankles and knees killing you?

I'm not a runner, so I can't really say. Very little cushioning, but I had no problems walking all around the zoo for a good 5 hours. Feet were a little tired at the end, but that's pretty much normal.

As an aside, the lunatic with the 3 foot blood clot did all of these same treks with the clot already in her leg. :yow1:

They don't cushion at all. They're razor thin. If you're running on asphalt or concrete and step on a pebble, it may make you wince just like if you were running barefoot.

It takes time to break them in. Or I should say, it'll take time to break in your feet and calves. You probably should not throw on a new pair of VFFs and run a 5K. I started walking in them, gradually working up to a mile, then two miles, etc. It was probably two months before I attempted to run a 5K in them.

Now I wear them all day on the weekends, including while hiking and riding my bike. They're like a second skin now.

Thanks for the link. Have you had experience with them?
I don't. I've had the link for about a year, and every time I'm ready to pull the trigger on a $200 pair of black dress shoes for my office, I talk myself out of it because I realize I could buy a couple more pair of VFFs with that money. :tongue2:

I will get a pair of the Terra Plana's eventually though. I've heard nothing but positives about them.

Knowing you, it's all because you kept sticking it in your mouth. :shake:

Always good to have a little muscle fatigue while the hardly used portions get a work out.

We all know she's more of a man than you. No surprise.

That is a pretty penny to drop on them. But I too will keep them in mind.

Ditto. Whenever outside, they're on.
