Dick Vitale (official thread)

ESPN - Dickie V's Preseason Top 40
The summer is coming to a close, so it is time to share my annual preseason rankings of the nation's Top 40 teams. All of these teams have the same goal: get to the Final Four, baby!

DICKIE V's PRESEASON TOP 40

1. North Carolina. With Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green all returning, the Tar Heels are the clear-cut preseason numero uno.

2. Louisville. Rick Pitino's squad is a legitimate Final Four contender. The addition of Samardo Samuels up front is a big plus.

3. Connecticut. Hasheem Thabeet will be a major force up front for Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun. Look for big things from A.J. Price in the backcourt.

4. UCLA. Coach Ben Howland is happy to have Darren Collison returning to the backcourt. The Bruins have one of the premier recruiting classes coming in.

5. Texas. A.J. Abrams and Damion James provide a solid 1-2 punch for the Longhorns. D.J. Augustin is gone, but this will still be a very dangerous team under Rick Barnes.

Contd....

Teams of note.....
7. Michigan State. Tom Izzo will miss Drew Neitzel, but the Spartans will be among the best in the Big Ten.

11. Purdue. Matt Painter's team sneaked up on a lot of people last season. With Robbie Hummel leading the way, the Boilermakers have high hopes.

22. Wisconsin. Bo Ryan will always have the Badgers in the hunt in the Big Ten.

38. Ohio State. A lot will depend on the big diaper dandy, B.J. Mullens. Thad Matta is a flat-out winner, my friends.

While I will agree that a lot depends upon how fast Mullens develops, I think just with his rebounding and defense a well thought a great deal. I think the spread from Michigan State to Ohio State should not be that far away.

I just can't listen to DV, he is just so over the top, and gets so carried away that he loses his place in the game, if you know what I mean. Every kid who comes along who can chew gum and dribble at the same time, is going to be "special" even more so when they play for one of his favorites.

I watched the tOSU vs UNC game with the sound off because I find him so irritating, it's a shame that the radio has a slight lag, or I would have listened to Paul and Ronnie do their broadcast while watching.

What a contrast listening to Bob Knight on Friday versus Vitale the night before. Knight broadcasts like a coach and a teacher, explaining why plays and possessions worked or didn't work, and adds a lot of value to the broadcast. Vitale is just a guy with a schtick. He never sees anything that you didn't or offers an insight that you wouldn't have come up with on your own. Knight needs a little bit of polish, but I'm looking forward to hearing him do more OSU games. He's solid and worthwhile to listen to. DV is just noise at this point.

As much as I think DV is pure noise and a distraction, I just can't go an entire season without hearing "Dipsy-do dunk-aroo!" or the other nonsense phrases he spouts. Then I pray there's another good game on another channel once I've heard that so I can change it. :)

Final Four color commentator

Say it ain't so. I have never watched the Final Four with the sound off but this year I might have to:(
ESPN's Dick Vitale is a rarity: Despite being arguably the best-known broadcaster in his sport, he's never worked its championship action.

But during the upcoming March Madness, he will: ESPN will use him as a game analyst on the NCAA Final Four ? for its international feed.

That overseas TV broadcast, going to 156 countries, will include Vitale working with play-by-play announcer Brad Nessler, on one semifinal game as well as the NCAA championship game. Jay Bilas, along with Nessler, will call the other semifinal.

Says ESPN executive vice-president John Wildhack: "In the history of ESPN, he's one of our most-important personalities. ... This is a reward and a thank you."
