Sam Webb: Recruiting
Inkster junior ready now

bilde

For Inkster junior quarterback Devin Gardner, Saturday's state-title matchup with East Grand Rapids is the culmination of a yearlong journey from potential star to proven one. Win or lose, he has made great strides in his first year on the team, and he has the statistics and scholarship offers to prove it.

OSU a possibility
The biggest threat to the in-state rivals might come from Ohio State. The Buckeyes were Gardner's favorite growing up.

"They coming at me very hard," Gardner said. "They said they wanted to see some film. They want to offer me, but I need to send film first."

Even if Jim Tressel does extend a scholarship, don't expect a commitment from Gardner to OSU, or any other school, anytime soon. He is content to take a patient approach to better assess all of his options.

"There is not really a timeline (to make a decision)," he said. "If I find the right school at the right time, then I will just choose that school. I've still got to do a lot of research. That's why all the schools are really even right now."

He looks huge. I would really love to land him. I wonder if OSU is waiting until 2009 recruiting is completed (or at least until Newsome and Boyd have decided). They aren't doing it at other positions, but QB is unique and they may not want to scare anyone away if they are trying to sell the 2009 guys on having a clear path to succeeding Pryor.

They're waiting for his film. I'm betting he'll be offered once they have his film, regardless of the 2009 class.

Rivals : New film

Gardner has a strong arm and squares himself well to his targets...he understands you throw where you aim, and that makes him very accurate, even on the run. He has good pocket presence and is very elusive. Gardner isn't a burner but he is quick. He mainly uses his feet to make plays with his arm, which serves him well. Nothing to speek of on his velocity, as the clips really didn't show him having to fire the ball, just mostly the long ball (which he throws well). He needs to work on his release point...he has a quick release but it's awkward and he needs to release it higher. Overall, I was pretty impressed but I'm not convinced we offer before camp. QB is a position we generally evaluate a ton before we offer. However, I would not object to an offer, though I want to see Bolden's film.
