Detroit Red Wings (Official Thread)

Detroit has played 26 games and has 29 points.

Everyone under them except for Columbus has played 25 or fewer games and only one of them, Nashville, has fewer than 27 points. The Wings don't play again until Wednesday and they could find themselves out of the playoffs entirely by the end of next week.

This upcoming trip out west won't be helping any matters either. Desperately needed anything more than one point out of this Columbus back-to-back, but that didn't happen. Going to be a rough ride the rest of March.

Yep....honestly I am wondering if the Wings have entered the Maple Leafs Zone - towards the end of Mats Sundin's career, the Maple Leafs were JUST good enough to sneak into the playoffs, but always got destroyed. Detroit has shown a similar pattern up until this year, and I'm just wondering if this is the year the bottom blows out.

The Wings are definitely in trouble. The GM won't do anything and to be honest, there isn't much he can do with this group. Any trades won't get any immediate help and any good draft picks would probably require one of the 3 guys they can't trade right now (Z, Dats, Howard).

Totally agree. I think (More like hope) they will be able to sneak into the playoffs, but if they do, I don't expect them to do anything at all. What is truly & mostly alarming about this team is the complete lack of depth at every position. Outside of the few core group of guys who have been there for years, there's nothing but inexperience and basically average at best players. Can't stay great forever, but I never expected the drop-off would be so significant & so quick to happen.

Well I don't think it was that quick, I saw the cracks two years ago against Phoenix and San Jose, but they were almost able to overcome them. Last year was a big harbinger of what was coming in the playoffs and it's exactly what we've seen this year.

The really eye-opening thing is that I can't see any quick solution to this. With what they have right now at there disposal, this is going to take quite a bit of time if they're going to get back to where they once were. There's really nothing we can offer in a trade that doesn't require something we can't afford to part with. Free agency is really the only option I can see for them to improve, because our young players aren't just going to become great overnight. Sadly, it's not possible for us to go around & snag up all of the best available free agents every summer.
