Keating's Corner: A jacket of a different color for Maltby

He was in on the joke in training camp.

When everyone was posing for pictures in uniform, there was a mention that perhaps Kirk Maltby should pose in one of the black Red Wings staff jackets -- just in case.

Which, of course, drew a smile from Maltby, a guy comfortable in his own skin.

Now that he’s decided to retire from playing, he’ll see how that jacket fits him.

What Maltby had trouble accepting was being a just-in-case player -- a Griffin with Red Wing potential should an injury occur. He didn’t want to be that guy who would agree to take a spot on the minor-league team, hoping that someone -- one of the guys he still considers a teammate -- gets hurt and then scurrying down I-96 from Grand Rapids to the Joe.

In this instance, it makes Malts one of the greatest teammates of all.

For those of us who follow the team and the sporting landscape in this town, we ache a little because another page is turned. A little bit of the legend of the dynasty erodes.

Thank you for dismantling Trashville tonight....

I'm worried about their defense. It hasn't looked that sharp so far and I'm just hoping the older guys hold up. I think Detroit needs to get some younger guys in there. I'm the kind of guy that loves a mix of fresh/young guys with the old/playoff tested veterans.

I don't think it has much to do with age as it does with urgency....

Dan Cleary is done. I wish Babcock would realize it.

Just been disappointed with the defense. Plus having Rafalski out isn't helping matters. Modano hasn't done anything and just isn't the same Modano. I also hope Franzen stays healthy this year. We need him strong when it comes to the playoffs.

Modano played very well tonight...it looked like he was more comfortable in his role....

And the Wings played a complete game tonight. Calgary didn't have much of a chance to score unless it was a power play.
