The number of walk-ons who populate the two-deep for Akron is interesting. And perhaps worrisome relative to the supposed "talent gap" between Ohio State and the rest of the league.
My thoughts on this are they are trying to preserve redshirts at the moment when facing Akron. When the suspended 4 (5) come back then the depth chart will fill out accordingly. If we have issues in the 2-deep against Akron they may burn some redshirts from guys like C. Grant or Tommy Brown the following games. We have depth (in my imo) but I think some of the eligibility is being preserved.

We have a great many scholarship athletes on the team who are not freshmen whose names do not appear on the 2-deep. At the same time, many walk-ons are there.

As I say, interesting.

Who are some of the guys you had in mind? Because my first thought when reading your post was similar to Diego's.

I hear you. But we have numerous suspensions that impact the 2 deep. 2 OL are suspended for Akron or longer (Adams and Linsley), 2 LB (Bell and Whiting), 1 DL (Thomas), 1 WR (Posey), 1 RB (Herron). I may even be missing some folks, I have no idea.

So who are you going to throw on the depth chart for some of these positions? The walk-ons make sense. It brings them pride for having made the 2-deep, and it saves the program from having to burn eligibility. From what I'm reading, the OL has two walk-ons and the LBers have two. Considering that the Star position (listed differently than either a DB or an LB) is a pseudo-LBer however and you need to consider how likely it is that Jackson or Maxwell see the field. And the OL is a different beast. But I'm sure Underwood and Bobek +/- Carter rotate around the line. I think Blackman and/or Kramer will be interesting walk-on talents with their big bodies.

Let's break it down...by my count there are 14 non-freshman scholarship recipients on roster not on the depth chart:

Adams - suspended
Herron - suspended
Linsley - suspended
Posey - suspended
Thomas - suspended
Whiting - suspended
Berry - injured
Evege - injured, out for year

We're halfway done before even touching performance issues/strength of position.

Guiton - passed by a True FR
Fellows - hasn't stayed out of sweats in two years here, a bit behind
Oliver - OK, finally we get to a guy that's not had a career we've expected. Still, he's about six months into a new position as a fifth year senior.
Allen - had trouble seeing the field at FSU, no different here
Domicone - probably a career special teams guy, DB is stacked as always
Wood - see Domicone, but a year younger

As for the walk-ons, did they "out-talent" a player, or are they filling in?
Blackman - in for Linsley
Kramer - in for Adams
Erwin - need a second punter around; can't have Bauserman hold as a starter
Doup - for practice purposes
Makridis - maybe Haynes isn't ready or they're going with separate short/long-snappers. Gets the benefit of the doubt due to his bloodlines and our most recent long snapper replacing a 10-year NFL vet as a rookie.
Jackson - in for Whiting, Curtis Grant has been here about 10 weeks, he'll learn
Maxwell - finally, we come to a guy who's leapfrogged over an actual player

I'm not saying there's not potential dead weight on the roster (Evege would've never repped at CB though he was a special teams demon), but I think extrapolating anything from this list is tough. This will not be the depth chart @ Lincoln.

In my opinion he leapfrogged Jon Newsome, who helped him out by transferring. So that one doesn't really count either.

Did you have someone else in mind as the second team sam LB?

I mean.. I look at this depth chart & I get pretty excited about the Buckeyes. It may just be the drought of the offseason starting to wear me down.. it may be the "excitement" of a new, young Buckeye take the reigns.. hell, it may be the Heuerman video. We look young, athletic, strong on the D Line, stable of tailbacks with young potential stars, Boren (g-d bless Rich Rod), Braxton (the "unkown" excitement - not knocking on Bauserman.. Not impressed with his past play but I'm willing to wait & see), Silver bullets in the back 7 from what I can see, and wideouts that are generating buzz out of camp.

I'm just ready for kickoff and to end this offseason.

The depth chart reads Joe Bauserman OR Braxton Miller, so no decision to start anyone was published in that depth chart.
