The back-ups will get a good amount of playing time. I wouldn't worry about 2012 just yet.

This. 2011 and 2012 will both be years where the bench will be thin at OL, undeniably, but next year we will have 2 tackles and a guard all with 3+ years in the program and plenty of game time experience , a center who is getting rave reviews and another guard who will have had the chance to get his feet wet this year. Once again, we will have to rely on true frosh in the 2-deep, but in the past three seasons we have had the players who were able to step up to the task and I am confident that the 2011 and 2012 OL classes will be able to do the same.

Edit: Both our guards will have significant PT and experience next year. Remembered Linlsey but forgot Mewhort. Duh.

This could be moved to an OL thread if needed, but why do you think we are going to have to rely on Freshmen next year? The depth chart shows 4 sophs and 4 freshmen on the 2-deep. So, logically, next year they will move up. The Sophs will be Juniors and the Freshmen will become Sophs. I am sure there will be freshmen back-ups, but I don't see us relying on freshmen for our OL next year.

Point taken Winslow.

I'm still bullish on the OL this year.

And I posit that if a new OL coach is brought in soon after seasons end he could potentially flip a recruit (see Kalis) or procure one (see Diamond).

We should land Davidson.

The troublesome fact is we will have to rely on true frosh OL next year.

Never a good idea, especially with the Nebraska on the sked.

I'm bulish on the team this year, and in the future if we can fix the OL issue.

We mayhave to move some bodies.

Fragel, Baldwin (he should of moved in the spring), maybe even Hale.
Not really fare to the kids but an opportunity for PT exists.
Look, I share your concern for the OL depth/starters. But in regards to 2012, you are on a ledge I cannot share quite yet. Norwell is a starting OT for 5 games at the least in 2011 and will get a shake at LT. Marcus Hall is a possible starting OT for 2012, is a starting guard for 2011 and will get a shake at LT. Jack Mewhort is a starting Guard in 2011 and will continue to be a force in 2012 (possible RT if necessary). Brian Bobek is going to get playing experience behind Brewster in 2011. Antonio Underwood will get playing experience in 2011. Possibly Chris Carter as well. We are going to find out in 2011 what we have currently on the team to offer the 2012 team.

Step back. Breathe. There is talent on the roster at the OL and we are likely to add talent in the 2012 recruiting class. Maybe not Kalis or Dodson, but still some talent.

I was really looking forward to seeing Berry out there, but I'm glad to know he'll be resting/healing up. I'm excited for Jordan. He's going to be carrying a lot of the workload. He's also the reason I'll most likely be wearing my #7 jersey to the game.

Can't wait to see Braxton take his first snap. Looks like that will happen against Akron.

Rob Simms has had a long NFL career.

But even so, he shouldn't of been starting for a National Title team as a frosh.

We got away with it.

What people forget as time wheres on was just how brutual the O was in'02, sans Clarrett.

This year, there are no backup QBs, WRs with meaningful experience. Given the attrition, where are almost no experienced starters either.

If Bobek can learn quickly and take over the center spot, OSU could have this lineup

LT Norwell
LG Linsley
OC Bobek
RG Hall
RT Mewhort

All of those guys will have starting experience except Bobek, and he should see meaningful backup minutes this year.

Underwood would likely be the utility man, with others only playing sparingly.

The line certainly has weaknesses, but they may actually be fine next year.

We were in that game due in large part to a frosh.

Bleed,
You do understand the difference btw a true frosh OL and TB.
I have no issues at all with a true frosh starting at TB.
See clarrett or the freak on the Ole Ball Coach's squad.

Winslow is a quality poster and his proposed 2012 line looks fine "on paper".

But the lack of competition is galling.
It impacts the entire squad.
Thinks like physicality in practice, working on short yardage situation, competion (see Steve Rehring showing up oout of shape every year).
Solid looks for the D in practice.
Next years spring ball.

It is baffling that we can be so deep at DL yet the one position OSU should be able to auto recruit at every year given our location - we seem to struggle.
