The Washington Post has now confirmed this story. For those that didn't live through this story, the movie All the President's Men is well worth watching.

Thank the Lord the man's identity is known...now one of the most overblown (though entertaining, certainly) political stories can be laid to rest, and two of the most overrated figures of the 20th century, Woodward and Bernstein, can officially no longer have any relevance. Of course, they'll write about this for the next 30 years, since it was their one (and only) meal ticket to immortality.

Of course, there are several things that just don't add up, such as locations he was supposedly at and information that he would probably not have any access to, but I'm sure that will be fodder for the next 30 years. I suspect that either the reporters had several sources, or "Deep Throat" himself had a few, and integrated the information himself before he passed it along. Either way, I could honestly care less. Nixon was going down anyway, because the judge (forget his name) was the one that was realy spearheading the entire effort. Liddy said Nixon didn't order it, Dean did, which A) Would explain why Dean has been more obsessed with it than anyone alive for the last 30 years, and B) Doesn't matter anyway, Nixon covered it up, so he was in big trouble.

All that said, I have to agree with tibor to an extent...the calm and stable way to which Liddy freely admits his complicity in breaking the law and leading to forcing a President to resign is rather frightening. As for Buchanan, well....his recent ramblings about WWII and the Catholic Church (and those that dare not belong to it) are pretty much right on par with what he said tonight.

Mark Felt, Watergate's `Deep Throat,' dies at 95

SAN FRANCISCO ? W. Mark Felt, the former FBI second-in-command who revealed himself as "Deep Throat" 30 years after he tipped off reporters to the Watergate scandal that toppled a president, has died. He was 95.
Felt died Thursday in Santa Rosa after suffering from congestive heart failure for several months, said family friend John D. O'Connor, who wrote the 2005 Vanity Fair article uncovering Felt's secret.
The shadowy central figure in the one of the most gripping political dramas of the 20th century, Felt insisted his alter ego be kept secret when he leaked damaging information about President Richard Nixon and his aides to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward.

.
Ultimately, his daughter Joan persuaded him to go public; after all, Woodward was sure to profit by revealing the secret after Felt died. "We could make at least enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I've run up for the kids' education," she told her father, according to the Vanity Fair article. "Let's do it for the family."

It's strange, I just watched All The President's Men last night, and then wake up to this news this morning.

My interest was rekindled in anticipation of going to see Frost/Nixon as well as the Newsweek story on Thomas Tamm, the whistleblower on the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program.

It's interesting to read some of the macho responses about why somebody in this kind of position wouldn't go on the record or reveal themselves. You should read the Tamm story to get a glimpse of how powerful people with an interest in their self-preservation can make life a living hell for somebody who wishes to shine a light on the truth - as well as for anybody who happens to be connected to them.
