Al Pacino and Barry Levinson will reunite with HBO for an untitled film about Joe Paterno and the Sandusky scandals at Penn State. The famed actor and director previously teamed with HBO for hit movies about Phil Spector and Dr. Jack Kevorkian. A previous incarnation of this film, called Happy Valley, was almost made for HBO with Brian DePalma directing. It was canceled in 2014. Production is set to begin in July.[/URL]

If you’re wondering what a legendary college football head coach who fell from grace looks like (very briefly) through the prism of Hollywood, you’re in luck.

It was confirmed in the summer of last year that Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino was set to star as former Penn State coach Joe Paterno in an HBO-produced film, with the movie focusing on the immediate aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child-sex scandal that erupted in November of 2011 and Paterno’s subsequent dismissal nearly two weeks later. “Paterno,” directed by Barry Levinson and also starring Emmy Award-winning actress Kathy Baker, is set to premiere at some point this spring.

Ahead of that, a trailer for the highly-anticipated flick was released Friday.

“The film lays out the elements of the story and leaves you to make your own judgment,” said Levinson. “There are times when you may feel one way, and times when you may feel a totally different way, and I think that’s what makes the piece so compelling.”

This one may end up not making anybody happy. Did the creators of this flick really not have a conclusive opinion?

New ending for Spotlight: To be fair and balanced, the Pope and Law were both really old guys, as well as celibate, and may not have fully comprehended the concept of sex with anyone, but especially sex with children.

Joe Paterno’s family issues statement regarding HBO movie

Here’s the statement from the Paterno family that Scott Paterno, Joe’s son, released Saturday.

Paterno family responds to HBO movie
The HBO movie regarding Joe Paterno is a fictionalized portrayal of the tragic events surrounding Jerry Sandusky’s crimes. Numerous scenes, events and dialogue bear no resemblance to what actually transpired. Everyone truly concerned about the scourge of child sexual abuse would be well served to read the report by former FBI agent Jim Clemente. As events of the last few years have confirmed, predators are present throughout our society. It is our hope and prayer that society as a whole comes to a better understanding of who these criminals are and how they work so successfully to avoid detection.

“Paterno” will first air Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET. The film centers on a two-week span in November 2011 when the Sandusky scandal broke, Paterno was fired by Penn State and he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Al Pacino ‘manages to both demonize and humanize Joe Paterno’ in HBO
film, critic says

Verne Gay, a TV critic for Newsday, said that the movie directed by Barry Levinson “carefully confines itself to the record, never drifting off into speculation or supposition.” Gay also weighed in on Pacino’s performance, saying he showed multiple sides of Paterno during a complex time.

“Brilliant as ever, Pacino is the master trickster who manages to both demonize and humanize Paterno,” Gay writes.

Watched the movie last night, was very “meh.” Pacino is good, though.

Could have done without nearly the entire first ten minutes being devoted to the 409 game. Or the kinda-artsy swirling around toward the end with a jumble of voices that went on for how many minutes? Kinda got the feeling they didn't have enough real material written to make it long enough, and felt the need to pad it. Hoped for more. Also found it quite "meh."

So, I have it on DVR. Seeing the reviews I'm inclined to just delete it without watching.

That said, if you were to tell me that they reenacted a specific scene from Sep 23, 2006... well... I might be convinced without any other fax or evidents!
