Deaths Of Notable Sports Figures (R.I.P.)

Sayers and RW Animal the same day...earth sucks

WWE superstar ‘Road Warrior Animal’ Joe Laurinaitis dies at 60

Joe Laurinaitis, WWE superstar the “Road Warrior Animal” and father of former linebacker with the Ohio State Buckeyes James Laurinaitis, has died at the age of 60.

Laurinaitis was one half of the hall of fame duo known as “The Road Warriors.” Along with tag team partner “Hawk,” the pair took the wrestling world by storm in the 80s and 90s selling out arenas across the country. The popular team was also one of wrestling’s most imposing duos – enhancing their muscular figures with face paint and spiked shoulder pads.

“One of the most intense Superstars to ever step into the squared circle, the 6-foot-2, 300-pound Animal spent the majority of his career alongside his tag team partner, Hawk.
Together, they formed what was arguably the most successful, popular and feared tandem of all time — The Road Warriors,” the WWE released in a statement.

Gibson was an impressive pain in the backside for Pirates fans during the years when the Pirates mattered. Always seemed to be a gentleman.
I can still hardly believe my 1968 Detroit Tigers beat him in game 7 after he had the 1.12 ERA that year, and allowed 1 combined run in his starts in Game 1 and Game 4.

He is just a little before my time, but I have heard a million stories. One thing too, back in his day they pitched. It wasn't any of the pitch count, take him out in the sixth and bring in a middle reliever, etc BS. He went to the mound and went to work for what was going to be nine innings if he had his stuff, which most of the time he did.

One of the few good things about being an old timer is you can look back and recall watching guys like Gibson pitch. No DH and starters were finishers. Players often played their entire careers with one team.

And with only 8 teams in each league you could memorize the starting lineup for every team in baseball.

In 1968 Bob Gibson started 34 games. He pitched 304 innings.

That works out to better than 8.9 innings per game.

But lest you think everyone did that - Steve Carlton also pitched 34 games for the Cards that year and went 231 innings - or 6.8 per game. Still more than anyone does today.

R.I.P.

When I was a kid, I couldn’t stand the teams that won a lot: Packers, Celtics, and Yankees.

I disliked Ford automobiles for several years because of Whitey.

That wasn’t your fault, Whitey, RIP.
