Deaths Of Notable Sports Figures (R.I.P.)

Wes Unseld, Washington Bullets Hall of Famer and NBA champion, dies at age 74

NBA legend Wes Unseld died at the age of 74, the Unseld family and the Washington Wizards announced in a joint statement on Tuesday. Named as one of the NBA's original 50 greatest players, Unseld is one of the most beloved figures in NBA history. He spent his entire 13-year career with the Bullets organization (Baltimore/Capital/Washington), winning a championship and being named Finals MVP in 1978.

Below is the statement from the Unseld family:

It is with profound sadness that we share that our adored husband, father and grandfather Wes Unseld passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family following lengthy health battles, most recently with pneumonia. He was the rock of our family -- an extremely devoted patriarch who reveled in being with his wife, children, friends and teammates. He was our hero and loved playing and working around the game of basketball for the cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., cities he proudly wore on his chest for so many years.

HIs legacy lives on in the family he treasured -- his daughter Kim, son Wes, daughter-in-law Evelyn, grandchildren Layla and Wes, and the love of his life for 50 years, his wife Connie -- and in the community of the Unselds' school, where the entire family contributed to enriching the lives of Baltimore's youth.

We would like to thank everyone who knew and loved him, personally and professionally, for their support during this loss. We will share information in the near future about how we will celebrate Wes' incredible life.

Unseld, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988, led the Bullets to four NBA Finals appearances, and he's one of just two players in NBA history to win league MVP as a rookie. The other is Wilt Chamberlain. After a standout three-year collegiate career at Louisville, Unseld was drafted No. 2 overall by the Bullets in 1968. Today, he ranks as the 12th-leading rebounder in NBA history with 13,769 career boards.

Legendary Tennessee, Pitt coach Johnny Majors dies at age 85

Johnny Majors, one of college football's greatest coaches and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, has died at the age of 85. The news was broken Wednesday morning by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lynn, in a statement via WNML.

"It's with a sad heart that we make this announcement," Mary Lynn said. "John passed away this morning. He spent his last hours doing something he dearly loved: looking out over his cherished Tennessee River."

Majors was in a rare class as a top-five program-building coach at three separate programs: Iowa State, Pitt and his alma mater, Tennessee. He coached the Cyclones from 1968 to 1972, leading the program to their first bowl game in history, a loss to LSU in the 1971 Sun Bowl. Majors then coached the Panthers from 1973 to 1976, winning a national title in his final season with a 12-0 record. Running back Tony Dorsett would go on to win the Heisman Trophy that season as well.

Thomas became the first US male gymnast to win a world title when he won the floor exercise in the 1978 world championships in Strasbourg, France. The Cincinnati Bengals lost a legend on Sunday morning, as it was announced that former cornerback Ken Riley had died at age 72. He spent all 15 of his NFL seasons, spanning three decades (1969-83), in Cincinnati.

Riley was a four-year starter at quarterback during his college days at Florida A&M, and also succeeded off of the field. He was a Rhodes Scholar candidate and was the senior class president in both high school and college. After his playing days, he returned to Florida A&M to serve as head coach from 1986 to 1993 and later became the school's athletics director.

I'm still not sure why he isn't in the Hall of Fame.

I remember Wes Unseld for 3 things:

Winning the MVP as a rookie,

Making unbelievable outlet passes,

And having legs like tree trunks, I'm talking Pete Johnson type thighs on a basketball player.

RIP, Wes.

I don't think so, Oh8ch. When I read BB73's post, I remembered sitting at the Scarlet and Gray on E14th and someone betting that Pete's thighs were bigger than my waste. They were.

I didn't trade many cards; however, the Giants have always been my favorite team, I had his card too:

I remember after graduating from Ohio State I sold my stack of baseball cards to some guy from Whitehall. I'm pretty sure I didn't get fair market value.......

When I returned from the military my card collection had disappeared.

Rookie cards for Rose, Ryan, etc. Cards dating back to the late '50s for Mays, Mantle, Musial and the rest. And i had pretty much a complete set of the 1959 season which I believe is the vintage shown above.

Still not over it.
