DE Walter "Scooter" Dublin (official thread)

how many recruits have we seen this year praise JT for the type of person he is? I think it is safe to say that our football program is in good hands and will be for many years to come. These kids realize that they could be part of an amazing dynasty here at tOSU.

That is why we win the close games, the tough games, the Bowl games, and Michigan...it is do to the type of players and individuals that JT brings in. He may not get all the 5 stars, may not bring enough players on campus for visits, or take enough risk but by being selective he is able to get kids that love tOSU, love him, and want to be part of something special. Walter is just another example of a Coach T recruit. Guys that are hard nosed, talented, and committed. They are gamers!!!

Edit: fix quote syntax JC

Buckeyes snag another defensive component

The restocking of Ohio State's defensive cupboard continued this morning when Walter Dublin, a defensive end from Sarasota, Fla., committed to sign with the Buckeyes' 2006 recruiting class. That was a day after Californian Mark Johnson, ranked 10th among linebacker prospects in the country by one recruiting service, said he would sign with OSU.
Dublin, 6 feet 3, 235 pounds, is one of the higher rated defensive line prospects in Florida, and is considered to be a swing player the likes of Will Smith and Bobby Carpenter. He chose OSU over Iowa, Virginia Tech and others. More than anything he chose the Buckeyes because of their coach, he said, after making his commitment just after 9 a.m. today.
"My major deciding factor was sitting down with coach (Jim) Tressel and having a nice talk," Dublin said. "The man is probably the most respectable guy I've ever met. We didn't talk about football. It was about what I wanted out of my full experience at Ohio State.
"He has the reputation of winning national championships and winning bowls, but further than that, it seems like all the players there are completely satisfied with their experience. That really left a big impact."
As for Johnson, from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, he picked the Buckeyes over California, Louisiana State and Michigan. But who knows what he would have done had the weather been more winter-like during his official visit to OSU last the weekend.
"I kind of had my mind made up before I got there," Johnson said by phone yesterday from L.A. "I told myself, ‘If it’s not too cold, I’m just going to commit.’ "
Thus OSU picked up a prospect ranked No. 10 among all linebackers in the nation by Scout.com, and ranked No. 5 among inside linebackers by Rivals.com. One thing that stands out immediately about Johnson is his 4.5-second speed in the 40-yard dash.
"This is a very big commitment for Ohio State because not only is Mark Johnson one of the top prospects in the country, but he fills a need, because everybody knows Ohio State has lost its three starting linebackers from this past season," said Bill Kurelic, Midwest expert for Rivals.com.
Johnson said he and others will have big shoes to fill in following A.J. Hawk, Anthony Schlegel and Bobby Carpenter.
"I liked watching all three of them, because they were great examples of that Ohio State tradition when it comes to linebacker play," Johnson said. "They just play on a different level.
"That’s why I want to go there. There’s just something about that defense. You can see you have to step your game up just to get to play for Ohio State."
The Buckeyes, with two other linebackers already committed to the 2006 class, are seeking at least two more. Colin McCarthy of Clearwater, Fla., reportedly has narrowed his choices to OSU and Miami, and Thaddeus Gibson of Euclid, Ohio, still is contemplating offers from Michigan, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee and OSU.

Great snag! Welcome aboard! This class is gaining some serious momentum.

"He has the reputation of winning national championships and winning bowls, but further than that, it seems like all the players there are completely satisfied with their experience. That really left a big impact."

Very well stated for a Sr. in high school. It's great to have bright and humble kids coming to play at OSU.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Sarasota's Dublin picks Ohio State

BY CHAD BROCKHOFF CORRESPONDENT

SARASOTA -- Sarasota High's Walter Dublin said on Tuesday that he will sign a national letter-of-intent to play college football at Ohio State.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end and three-year letter winner considered several scholarship offers, but chose the 2006 Fiesta Bowl champion Buckeyes over Minnesota, Iowa and Clemson. Dublin visited the Columbus campus this past weekend and has canceled a planned trip to Clemson.

He is expected to sign his letter-of-intent on Feb. 1, the first day of the national signing period for high school football players.

Dublin, rated by rivals.com as the nation's 28th-best weakside defensive end, helped Sarasota to consecutive playoff appearances the last two seasons.

He recorded 84 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 14 sacks for the Class 5A-District 11 champions in 2004 and was named to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association's All-District 15 team this past season despite missing four games with an ankle injury.

Dublin runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6-second neighborhood, and Ohio State plans on taking advantage of that speed by using him at their Leo position, which is a combination weakside defensive end/outside linebacker.

Sarasota head coach Bob Perkins said that Dublin will have to add 10-15 pounds to compete for playing time next fall.

"It's been a terrific three years at the varsity level," Perkins said. "He brings the intensity every day at practice, and that motor just runs. That's the one word that pops out of everybody's mouth when they watch film of him.

"He's well-spoken and respected by his peers and in the community. He is the epitome of what we want our kids to be like when they graduate from our program."

Dublin is following in the footsteps of former Sailor standouts Cedric Saunders and Chico Nelson, who were co-captains of the 1993 Buckeye squad that went 10-1-1 and won a share of the Big Ten championship.

JT told me that he puts little or NO stock in recruiting analysts but that Max Emfinger, though a character, actually does a pretty good job and actuall looks at film on any player he rates.

Max may look at a lot of film, but he isn't above ranking guys he hasn't seen. Every service (fan based) does that. They simply cannot get all the film when they would like it and cannot risk leaving big named guys out that they don't have film on.

I do like the idea of a composite score between ESPN, Rivals, Scout and Max.

BTW -- here's the film on Scoot Dublin again:
