I think it's all mental with Vern these days. He seems like too sensitive of a guy in a harsh business.

This. I hate to say it but some of his comments sound downright childish. Produce or you're out. That's the NFL.

If he sees himself as a victim (again) this latest cut may be his last.

Some people can't take the scarlet-colored glasses off. I think there are Browns fans board who would prefer if their team was composed entirely of tOSU alumni who have washed out on other teams.

After washing out with Bears, I don't see where he would fit

Talking to Bears personnel down at training camp earlier this month, I asked around about Vernon Gholston. The responses were lukewarm at best. But the one constant I kept hearing throughout the day was obvious: if Gholston was going to produce (and stick in the NFL) this was the ideal scheme for him in Chicago.

Are there any more opportunities left for Gholston after being cut by the Bears?

And we all know how that turned out when the Bears cut the former Jets first-round pick to trim their roster down to 80-players today.

Saw it myself just watching one-on-one pass rush at practice. Didn?t see explosion off the line or a player that was schooled on using his hands at the point of attack. No question he was an athlete (and a NFL combine talent), but knowing football, I didn?t see a player that was going to stick in Chicago.

There was something, well, missing. And now we should really wonder if Gholston is done?for good.

Think about for a minute. Gholston has now washed out under Rex Ryan and Lovie Smith. Two defensive head coaches that have strong reputations in this league for teaching and getting the most out of their talent.

We are also talking about two different schemes. The 3-4 pressure front in New York and the zone based 4-3 defense in Chicago that must get pressure from their front four.

Two solid opportunities to stick on a roster from my perspective, and two opportunities that most players don?t get in this league. He was given that standard ?second chance? by the Bears all based on his draft position.

But after his release, can you see anyone taking another flier on Gholston? Not in my opinion, and I don?t think many people would disagree right now.

Maybe Vern gets another shot...who knows. But unfortunately for him, he's done little to earn one thus far. So, if he DOES get another shot, he'll have earned that one. I wouldn't expect to see him in the league much more, but that's OK, he was a great Buckeye and presumably made some good money in the NFL.

I just have a hard time believing that a 26 year old with good size and speed can't catch on anywhere. It honestly perplexes me because there are TERRIBLE players on some of these teams that don't have half the skills he does.

As others have noted, Big Vern managed to do a number on Jake Long and HE turned out pretty good...but that hasn't translated to anything tangible in the NFL. Maybe he can still make something happen, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Just because you have good measurables doesn't mean you'll make it in the league. Look at JaMarcus Russell. If Vernon doesn't have his heart in playing, and being the best he can be, then players with far worse abilities will make the cut when they put 110% into it.

As one of those Browns fans who would like and we're hoping the FO would draft certain alums - allow me to say.... Your post is inaccurate. There isn't one poster on this board that feels that way.

Heart absolutely has everything to do with it, I was just commenting on the physical abilities. It's an absolute waste of talent to have gifts like that if he isn't giving it his all. I'm not saying he has no heart, but if he doesn't he is wasting rare talent.
