It doesn't happen.

I give Ryan so much credit though...let me tell everyone how this all went down.

Ryan was ready to hate Vernon for the amount of money he made and his lack of production. But a funny thing happened...Vernon grew on Ryan with his pleasant attitude, and SHOCKINGLY, his decesion to take a pay-cut. Ryan legitametely likes the kid, and wishes nothing but success for him.

Unfortunately for the Jets and all parties involved, Veron is a 4-3 DE. IT'S REALLY AS SIMPLE AS THAT. Unless Vernon is willing to play for next to nothing, he won't be resigned by the Jets to be a 3-4 DE. He isn't a 3-4 DE no matter how nice Rex is about it. He loves Vernon and his attitude, but he isn't a LB and he isn't close to an ideal 3-4 DE.

But he likes Vernon, and is willing to put a good word in for him, and keep the relentless NY media off his ass which is a nice gesture. I like Rex for that....

It doesn't happen.

LaMarr Woodley is doing well. However two factors help Woodley. He plays for the Steelers where he gets amazing coaching and they use Woodley properly in blitz schemes. 2nd, Michigan played some 3-4 under Carr. They actually played the 3-4 in several games in 2005. He actually had experience playing as a rush linebacker. Of course he could play the DE spot very well.

Gholston is a freak of nature and just can't play in the 3-4 as an end or a linebacker it seems. I'm not bashing, but I think he needs to go to a team that primary runs the 4-3. The fact he has no sacks in his career just shocks me. He and the Jets need to part ways.

Not sure if you are taking me to task or not but...

Vernon maxed his frame out at Ohio State. Woodley had a much larger frame and fits a 3-4 DE much better than Gholston.

Vernon can still be very productive in the NFL, but it wont happen as a member of the Jets. However, the fact that Vernon is willing to give up loot to stay in New York tells me he might stay with the Jets. Not good for his stats, but if it makes him happy.....

Interestingly, the Jets right DE, Mike Devito at 305 lbs, has zero sacks this season. That added weight definitely helped him outshine Gholston.

Granted, Shaun Ellis (290 lbs) who's staring in front of Gholston, has 3.5 sacks. But that ties him as only the 37th best defensive lineman. Not great, not horrible.

3-4 DE's aren't really known for sacks tough. They're known for taking on multiple blockers and setting the edge on run plays. Vernon has had very few tackles on the season and just doesn't have the body of a 3-4 DE.

Vernon is a 4-3 DE. If he wants to take a massive paycut to stay in New York I'm sure the Jets would keep him, but the kid can revive his career should he choose to go to the right system.

That last article sounded a lot more positive than what you're saying. I haven't watched the jets much but reading those press clippings, Vern seems to be settling into his role.

Then we really shouldn't be expecting a lot of sacks from him in this system. Which is another good reason for him to leave. He did almost get one recently, but the QB got away with an intentional grounding.

Does anyone know how many years are left on his contract?

Gholston needs sack for pay day -- or freedom

ESPN's Adam Schefter has an interesting note on Vernon Gholston his "10 Spot" notes column. Schefter writes:

"Plenty is riding on Vernon Gholston's first sack. The Jets' defensive end, New York's 2008 first-round pick, keeps getting closer and closer to the first sack of his NFL career. According to NFL Players Association documents, Gholston needs only one sack to trigger a $9.1 million roster bonus that the Jets would have the option to pick up next March.

"Gholston also could activate the $9.1 million bonus with 20 percent play time this season or one fumble recovery. If the Jets declined to pick it up, Gholston then would become an unrestricted free agent. This is an escalator that the Jets worked into Gholston's contract last offseason, when the two sides agreed to restructure his deal. So one sack, one fumble recovery, one interception or 20 percent play time could mean a big payday -- or it could punch Gholston's ticket out of New York."

Obviously, the Jets aren't going to pay Gholston that kind of money, so, basically, he'll become a free man with his first sack ... if he ever gets it.

Vernon Gholston still seeking first NFL sack

The New York Jets drafted Vernon Gholston sixth overall in 2008. He was supposed to be a relentless, overbearing, quarterback-attacking machine.

He enters Sunday's regular-season finale against the Buffalo Bills still searching for his first NFL sack.

ESPNNewYork.com reporter Rich Cimini shined a spotlight on Gholston's quest. Jets head coach Rex Ryan admitted it's a priority to get Gholston a sack and has gone so far as to devise special schemes to tally that first one.

"Of all our individual priorities, that might be No. 1," Ryan said. "I'd love to see Vernon get the sack. Just for him."

Since Gholston entered the NFL, 636 players have recorded at least a half sack. Among that large group are 110 undrafted players.

After three seasons on practice squads, Jets defensive tackle Marcus Dixon recorded a sack in his second NFL game Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Dixon was the 14th Jets player to get one this year.

"It is an amazing thing," Ryan said. "The kid has a lot of talent, but golly. You think if he gets his first, he'll get more. The toughest one is that first one. He's a great kid. He's trying."

Jets coach Rex Ryan talked up Vernon Gholston throughout Hard Knocks like he was going to break out this season. Five months later, Gholston isn?t even one of the Jets? best 45 players.

Gholston was a surprise healthy scratch for Saturday night?s game against the Colts. Gholston was joined by fellow Hard Knocks favorites Joe McKnight and Vlad Ducasse on the inactive list.

It's safe to assume that DE/LB Vernon Gholston has played his last game as a Jet after a thoroughly underwhelming three seasons since he was drafted in the first round in 2008.

Considering that Gholston has been inactive all three playoff games, including yesterday when practice-squader Martin Tevaseu was signed to the 53-man roster and active, it's fair to wonder if the Jets' patience has worn out.

Gholston, who's without a single NFL sack in three seasons, has received numerous verbal votes of confidence from Ryan dating back to last season.

Yet Gholston has been a healthy scratch all postseason and, even with DE Shaun Ellis' knee hurting yesterday, he couldn't crack the lineup.

if the jets release him i hope heckert and holmgren jump on this guy. since we are most probably jumping to the 4-3, he would be a great pickup at de. he just doesn't fit into their 3-4 system and they are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. gholston still has a ton of potential and i would love to see him reach in in cleveland.
