DE Tyreke Smith (Seattle Seahawks)

A LOOK AT GUNNAR HOAK AND OHIO STATE'S MOST IMPORTANT BACKUPS IN 2019

TYREKE SMITH

Despite the losses of Nick Bosa and Dre'Mont Jones, Ohio State's defensive line is one of the most loaded units not just on the team or in the Big Ten, but the entire country. Chase Young is primed to step into superstardom, the interior is absolutely stacked with Davon Hamilton, Jashon Cornell, Robert Landers, Tommy Togiai and Taron Vincent, and new defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has a bevy of exterior pass-rushers at his disposal.

One of those pass-rushers is Tyreke Smith, who's expected to back Young up this fall.

Smith had an excellent winter and spring camp and turned the heads of the coaching staff and upperclassmen. Young himself has taken it upon himself to groom Smith into the best lineman he can be.

“Every chance I get to text Tyreke, or talk to him, try to get some things to work on with him, I’m gonna do it,” Young said. “I want him to be the best player he can be.”

OHIO STATE SOPHOMORE DE TYREKE SMITH UNDERGOES THURSDAY SURGERY
By Garrett StepienJune 13, 2019 (11:15 am)Football, Garrett Stepien

Head coach Ryan Day did not provide any updates on injuries for the Buckeyes when asked last Wednesday during an offseason press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

When reached Thursday by BSB, a team spokesperson said there was “nothing” more Ohio State could add to Smith’s tweet.

The 6-4, 267-pounder appeared to practice without limitations throughout OSU’s spring camp in March and April.

He played 13 of Ohio State’s 14 games in 2018, recording nine tackles and cracking the team’s deep defensive line rotation.

His freshman season served as the foundation for potentially breaking out in the 2019 campaign, projecting to be a co-starting defensive endfor the Buckeyes with junior Chase Young (6-5, 265).

“My expectations? Just to be the best I can for my team, to help the unit out as much as I can,” Smith said March 29 after OSU’s eighth practice of spring camp. “I’m trying to be noticed as one of the best D-linemen in the country. That’s my goal, and just do anything to help the unit be better.”

Ranking Ohio State’s Playmakers on Defense: No. 9 — Tyreke Smith

Tyreke-Smith-Rutgers-1170x780.jpg

The No. 9 player on this list fought his way into the Rushmen Package as a true freshman, and this year expects to be in the defensive end rotation for the Buckeyes.

No. 9 — Tyreke Smith, Soph Defensive End
Tyreke Smith came to Ohio State as the No. 4 weakside defensive end in the nation.

Even before his arrival he was receiving comparisons to former Buckeye defensive end Tyquan Lewis, who was the 2016 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Despite not enrolling early, Smith did well enough in camp as a true freshman to work his way into the Buckeyes’ Rushmen Package as an inside rusher.

There were no tackles for loss last year as a rookie, but the experience was a very good one.

Smith played in 13 games for the Buckeyes last year, securing nine tackles.

I have a theory. Players and coaches talk about new guys to flash. Old hats like Reke aren’t talked about because among the team it’s a given. It’s old hat.

Reke is gonna make a big impact but he isn’t talked about as much because it isn’t as news worthy IMO. Everyone knew early he was a bad ass. That’s yesterday’s news.

But come game time, this dude is gonna make himself newsworthy.

Ohio State is loaded with talent once again this season, but much of it is unproven.

The Buckeyes signed their two highest-rated recruiting classes of the modern era in 2017 and 2018, and with those players entering their second and third seasons respectively, it’s their time to make an impact – in many cases, for the first time.

Here are 10 players who will be stepping into larger roles with the team and seem poised for breakout seasons in 2019.

TYREKE SMITH – DEFENSIVE END – SOPHOMORE
The No. 34 overall player in the 2018 class, Tyreke Smith has potential to be an elite pass-rusher and after a season in the program, figures to be on the verge of a breakout season.

Though he’s unlikely to be a starter at the beginning of the season with Chase Young and Jonathan Cooper holding down the two defensive end spots, Smith figures to be the next player in the rotation and will see plenty of action.

CINCINNATI NOTEBOOK: GARRETT WILSON CATCHES FIRST TOUCHDOWN, TYREKE SMITH FLASHES HIS ABILITY AND CHASE YOUNG BLOCKS HIS FIRST FIELD GOAL EVER

Tyreke Smith has been hyped as one of the young defensive ends who could emerge as Ohio State’s next star at that position, but he did not have a single sack as a true freshman and did not play in the Buckeyes’ season opener this year due to an undisclosed injury.

In the span of just three plays on Saturday, however, Smith made two big plays that proved he was healthy and demonstrated his ability to be an impact player.

With the Bearcats seriously threatening to score for the first time early in the second quarter of Saturday’s game, following a roughing the passer penalty against fellow sophomore defensive lineman Tommy Togiai, Smith blew by Cincinnati right tackle Chris Ferguson, exploded into the backfield and buried Bearcats quarterback Desmond Ridder for a 7-yard sack.

Two plays later, Smith set the edge perfectly on a run up the middle by Michael Warren to collapse on him for a stop two yards short of the line-to-make on 3rd-and-4.

Ohio State’s already-established star at defensive end, Chase Young, was among those who were impressed by what they saw from Smith on Saturday – but like Fields with Wilson, he wasn’t surprised.

“I already knew Tyreke could do that,” Young said. “He’s going to keep putting on display how great he is. He’s working every day to be the best player he can be, he’s going to be real good.”

Tyreke Smith had been dealing with pain in his groin since high school, but he always played through it.

The Ohio State defensive end appeared in all 14 of the Buckeyes’ games as a true freshman last season, and tried to ignore that he was hurt. After realizing his injury was worsening during a workout this summer, however, Smith finally decided it was time to do something about it.

“I got a high pain tolerance, so I just thought I was being a little baby,” Smith said while meeting with the media on Wednesday. “I tried to keep going through it, tried to keep playing through it, thought my leg was just hurting. But I finally told the doctor I needed to do something about it.”

Smith underwent surgery on his groin on June 13, and was cleared to return to practice in time for the start of preseason camp in August. He remained limited throughout camp as he worked his way back to 100 percent, though, and was held out of the Buckeyes’ season opener against FAU two Saturdays ago because of the injury.

“I was ready to play, but just Coach didn’t want to play me in that game,” Smith said. “If they needed me, I would have played and same with Tyler (Friday, who also missed the season opener with an undisclosed injury) but we didn’t have to play so that was good for us.”

“I GOT A HIGH PAIN TOLERANCE, SO I JUST THOUGHT I WAS BEING A LITTLE BABY.”– OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE END TYREKE SMITH ON PLAYING THROUGH A GROIN INJURY IN 2018

Smith returned to the field this past Saturday against Cincinnati, and made it clear that he was fully healthy when he blew by Bearcats right tackle Chris Ferguson to bury Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder for a 7-yard sack – the first sack of Smith’s Ohio State career – in the second quarter.

Two plays later, Smith also made a key run stop two yards short of the first-down marker on 3rd-and-4, leading to a blocked field goal by fellow Ohio State defensive end Chase Young on the next play.

After recording no sacks in 2018, when he played 183 snaps as a backup defensive end and situational pass-rushing tackle for the Buckeyes, Smith was ready to get his first quarterback takedown under his belt.

“That felt good,” Smith said. “Just all the work I put in and stuff like that, getting off my injury, going hard so yeah, I felt good.”

Smith didn’t start in Saturday’s game, but he played the second-most snaps of any defensive end (21) and was named as a champion for the game. He’s expected to be a key player in the Buckeyes’ defensive end rotation all season long, even with Jonathon Cooper – who has missed the first two games of the season with an injury of his own – likely to return to the starting lineup opposite Young once he is healthy.

Saturday was the first real flash of how good Smith, the No. 34 overall prospect in the entire recruiting class of 2018, has the potential to be for the Buckeyes now that he is healthy and has a year of experience under his belt. But he believes he’s still only scratching the surface of the player he could be under defensive line coach Larry Johnson’s tutelage.

“He’s pushing me past my limit, and that’s what I like,” Smith said. “I’m a person that pushes myself. I’m never satisfied. Everything has to be a step more. I’m kind of a perfectionist in a way, and Coach J’s almost in the same way. He always thinks that we can get better. If we do something good, he thinks we can do it great.

“I think the sky’s the limit for me. I can do a lot of things, I can be a force.”

To become the next great Ohio State defensive end, Smith has big shoes to fill. Young is arguably the best defensive end in college football right now, and before him, Nick and Joey Bosa could make the same claim. But Smith isn’t one to set his goals low.

“I want to be the best D-end that comes out of here, and that’s my personal goal,” Smith said. “I know I’m with the best coach, and I got my teammates around me that are going to get me better. I got people like Nick, Chase and everybody to push me and set the bar.”

Young is among Smith’s Ohio State teammates who are expecting big things from him, too.

“He’s going to keep putting on display how great he is,” Young said after Saturday’s game. “He’s working every day to be the best player he can be. He’s going to be real good.”
