DE Se'Von Pittman (transfer to Akron)

Scout $ - Coaching Breakdown: Se'Von Pittman

10/13

By The Bank...great breakdown by Pittman's HC...some we've heard before (physcially ahead of the game...still developing as a football player)...some that is new (could end up filling out in the 280-290 range and could end up inside)...talks about areas he needs to improve upon, the recruiting process and a time frame for a decision.

McKinley defensive end Se'Von Pittman pressures Boardman quarterback Ryan Pollifrone during their Week Nine game.

There have been plenty of challenges presented this season to the Massillon Tiger offense, especially along the line of scrimmage. However, few that have faced the Tigers thus far may match the one awaiting them on Saturday afternoon in the 120th meeting against archrival McKinley.

That challenge would be the highly-touted Bulldog defensive end tandem of senior Steve Miller and junior Se?Von Pittman.

Miller, a 6-foot-4, 242-pound senior, has already elected to continue his playing career collegiately at Ohio State. Pittman, a 6-5, 235-pound junior, has college coaches at almost every major program, including Alabama, Florida and Ohio State, knocking down his door for his services.

Of course, most of the high school coaches in the area already knew the abilities of both. That goes especially for the coaches at Massillon, which are preparing to face Miller for the fourth time in his career, while it will be the third time the Tigers have faced Pittman.

"They obviously got a whole another year of experience under their belts, which is a big difference from last year to this year," Tiger offensive line coach Matt Leisure said Monday evening. "They have more time together and more experience as a defense. Across the front four, they're the biggest challenge we've faced all year. We've been tested week-in and week-out by some different teams, which has helped us prepare for this point, but obviously nothing can mimic what those guys can do."

Continued...

Then again, there is no such injury issue with Pittman, who is having the kind of break-though season which has put him high on the wish lists of coaches like Nick Saban and Jim Tressel. The junior has thrived in powering in off the edge with a speed rush, often leaving opposing linemen?s heads spinning.

my mother works at mckinley high school and says that pittman is a really good kid. he stays out of trouble and is very smart (he can write his own ticket academically). she said that he was very impressed by florida and alabama and that he liked both schools. i worry that this kid may go down south and that the bucks could lose him.

I think it's inevitable that some good Ohio DE's in the upcoming class leave the state as there seem to be so many. Just have to hope the staff can land the best of the best.

Se'Von Pittman
DE/OLB | 6-4, 225
Canton McKinley (Ohio) High School
TR Grade: 5.8

Scouting Report:

Scale
10: Special
9: Elite
8: Very good
6-7: Above average
5: Average
1-4: Needs work

Size/Frame: 8
Strength: 5
Burst/Explosiveness: 6
Technique: 5
Athleticism: 7
Hand Use: 6
Motor: 8
Aggressiveness: 8
Pass Rush: 8
Run Defense: 7
Durability: 7
Intangibles: 6

For a HS DE he shows rare comfort in coverage where he does a surprisingly good job of reading and reacting to the QB. Doesn't jump off the screen with his hand in the ground; his disengaging skills are weaker than they should be and his strength is average at best. Plays much more effective when he gets to stand. Se'Von shows a good motor and is constantly chasing down plays while generally taking a good angle. Pittman doesn't have the frame that will add too much more weight and given his effectiveness in space he seems much more inclined for success at the next level at OLB instead of DE. Has too great of a tendency to arm tackle which will need to be addressed. Does have strong instincts which can't be undervalued.

Translation to College:

It'll take some time for Se'Von to learn the nuances of OLB at the college level and also to work on some technique issues to be successful at the next level. With that said, his natural instincts in coverage and his ability to come off the edge make him a very intriguing option for college coaches who see him as having a very high ceiling. If he can learn the system, and he has no issues in the past to suggest he can't, he can be a high impact player. Has the frame to hold up against the run, the speed to cover TE's, and the instincts to take good angles in both the run and pass game. It'll take a couple years but give him a redshirt and some learning time the first couple years and then get ready to watch him take off as an impact OLB.

man it seems like bama is starting to offer alot of kids in ohio
Moderate success with DePriest and Ryan Kelly and maybe others, plus they are developing in-state relations with coaches. Combo that with, they are a hot team right now as a football powerhouse (and to be fair, have comparatively low academic standards for some of the Ohio prospects who would likely not qualify at tOSU). Why wouldn't they want to get into the Ohio talent base and pick a few top prospects every now and then?

I hope that the Crimson Tide fail at every turn; I know this won't be the case.
