DE Mike Vrabel (All B1G, All American, Pro Bowl, All Pro, Super Bowl Champion)

There’s a system that has been put in place by OSU that really has over a decade of organizational experience at this point.

Urban Meyer laid the groundwork with Mark Pantoni and it has rolled over with Ryan Day. Everything from player talent evaluations to deep dives into their personal lives (what kind of kid are you getting?).

I honestly can’t see Vrabel as the type to sit down and break down a HS kids tape and do a talent evaluation. Not that he isn’t capable I just don’t think he’d personally view it as a good use of his time. I think Day does this religiously as part of his recruiting process. I think guys like Saban and Dabo are intimately involved in recruiting evaluation as well.

Not to say Vrabel couldn’t be a really good college coach (he has the acumen and temperament to coach at any level). I just think he’d need a massive amount of help in regards to navigating recruiting classes and NIL because I believe he’d feel that type of stuff is an annoyance.

Pantoni is amazing at his job so that’s a start….but I also wonder how many of the internal guys who have built the machine would feel about it. There’s a lot of risk in it, IMO.

That can go the other way just as easily though.

I have always heard/read successful HC's at big schools refer to it as a CEO kind of job. They are the face of the program to the boosters, alumni, school, etc as well as being responsible for the output of the football team that we see every weekend. A good manager of managers could make it work by staying out of the way of his staff. It all comes down to how good the staff is and the art of knowing how much(and when) to trust but verify them.

I think a guy with a pedigree and personal charisma of Vrabel could excel in the role with the machine that's in place.

That's really hard for me to believe. Didn't he strongly dislike recruiting when he was here? And that was back before he had to deal with NIL and the transfer portal
I’d imagine recruiting is a bigger pain in the ass as a position coach than as the head coach. It’s probably more time consuming for the head coach but there’s less of the bullshit you have to deal with.

Message board wishcasting.

We have Ryan Day for another year, pending what happens in Ann Arbor next fall. My opinion.

What happens if we get rematched in the CFP and he gets fisted again?

Might be a blessing in disguise, saves us another year waiting on that third L (that will surely do him in).

See above/below. That’s how you expedite this whole thing. Which I would be fine with figuring out.

That would definitely fast track a decision, one way or the other.

I would tend to agree but a third L to tsun would bring heat that he couldn't easily ignore.

Day is showing signs of being worse at building a staff than Urban was and with zero street cred to back him up when they go full retard.
I hear you but, on the flip side and knocking on wood here, there have been no academic or off field issues that embarrass the University. Lots of guys on first teams and national awards. Academic progress is tops in BIG. Gene likey

Have you guys met Gene Smith? Day isn’t going anywhere.

I agree. Anybody know when the last time any school fired a head coach (because he didn't win all their games) after going 11-1 was?

That's how we got 13 years of Cooper.

I'm not saying they will fire Day. They most assuredly will not.

They should but they won't.
