DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

Ohio State linebacker agrees to terms Aaron Wilson
June 10, 2010

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson has agreed to terms on a three-year deal, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

It's rare for a draft pick to receive a three-year contract nowadays with most teams preferring to negotiate four-year pacts.

Gibson was drafted in the fourth round.

Gibson primarily played defensive end at Ohio State, but the 6-foot-2, 243-pounder played linebacker in high school.

Last season, he was named second-team All-Big Ten Conference as he led the Buckeyes with 13 tackles for losses and ranked second on the team with four sacks.

He also forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass.

The Steelers displayed a lot of interest in Gibson at his Pro Day workout where he ran the 40-yard dash in the low 4.6 range. Steelers vice president of football operations Kevin Colbert and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau attended the workout.

Gibson is looking forward to playing linebacker in the NFL.

"It's truly the position I love the most," Gibson said during the NFL scouting combine. "I'm excited to hear the talk about me going back to linebacker, honestly, but I don't mind playing defensive end, either. I'm just excited about the opportunity and ready to go."

In 2008, Gibson registered five sacks and nine tackles for losses.

For his career, he recorded 10 sacks and 25 tackles for losses.

He decided to leave school after his junior season to help his family with medical expenses when the NFL draft advisory board gave him a second-round grade.

Steelers' Gibson believes collegiate OLB experience helpful

Steelers rookie Thaddeus Gibson primarily played defensive end at Ohio State, but he has some experience at outside linebacker, the position he'll play in Pittsburgh's scheme. Gibson, the Steelers' fourth-round pick, played outside linebacker in high school and also played the position in some packages for the Buckeyes. Gibson, who played the "Leo" position in Ohio State's defense, would move from defensive end to outside linebacker when the Buckeyes used their nickel package and switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 look. "Playing that role that I played at Ohio State got me prepared for the job I'm doing now," he said. Gibson, who signed with the Steelers on June 11, told PFW he'll play left outside linebacker, where Pro Bowler LaMarr Woodley ? himself a former collegiate defensive end ? is entrenched as the starter, with fellow Pro Bowler James Harrison on the right side. Gibson is excited to learn from both. "You couldn't be in a better place or a better situation," he said.

Bonus: Jason Worilds vs. Thaddeus Gibson vs. Andre Frazier - It's clear that Dick LeBeau and the Steelers are intent on finding depth to sprinkle into the rotation with LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison at outside linebacker. Clearly, Frazier is not a guy who's going to see many snaps on the defensive side of the ball. If he was, he would have been the last two years. In fact, if all goes according to plan (i.e. both Woodley and Deebo stay healthy), the duo should see the vast majority of the snaps on defense, but if Worilds and Gibson prove to be capable headhunters on special teams, I wouldn't be surprised to see LeBeau work in either Worilds or Gibson throughout the year to help keep the starters fresh come December. We all know how much the Steelers struggled on coverage units last year, and the best way for either of the two rookies to secure a helmet would be to demonstrate value on special teams. That goes for Frazier too, who could easily keep his job in 2010 by outplaying the two rookies on special teams this next month.

"Backs on 'backers" is one of coach Mike Tomlin's favorite drills. Tomlin wanted to see how much his rookie linebackers enjoyed the drill, too.

Jason Worilds and Thaddeus Gibson took a hefty number of reps during the drill, winning much more than they lost.

Worilds beat each one of the most frequently used backs in the drill at least once in Justin Vincent, Isaac Redman and Demetrius Taylor. Tight end David Johnson got the best of Worilds once.

At one point, Tomlin yelled out "Let's see if anybody can block 97."

Gibson was just as intense. He was successful against Johnson, Rashard Mendenall and Frank Summers, while he was stood up once by Redman.

"If you are a linebacker and you are shy, you usually have a problem, and I don't think he has that problem," Tomlin said of Gibson.

Gibson shines in backs on backers
Thaddeus Gibson, a fifth-round pick out of Ohio State, is quickly becoming the camp sensation.

Gibson was nearly unblockable in the backs on backers drill, beating six opponents, losing only to Isaac Redman. He shows a lot of explosiveness.

A buddy of mine recently went to Latrobe to watch Steelers camp. I should point out not only is he not a Buckeye fan he's pretty anti tOSU. None of the players had names on their jerseys so he was unfamiliar with a lot of the young guys. Well he is watching a blitz pick up drill where running backs are working against linebackers. Number 90 caught his eye immediately and continued to do so after blowing up Rashard Mendenhall on three straight plays. It got so bad that Coach Tomlin had to come in and rescue Mendenhall and asked if anyone could block #90. Another running back was brought in to block 90 and he was treated just as disrespectfully as Mr. Mendenhall. Number 90 encouraged anyone that wanted to come get some and let it be known none of them could block him.

My buddy's cousin, a scout with the Steelers, walks up and my buddy asks him who 90 is. "That's Thaddeus Gibson from The Ohio State University...and he's for real" Burn

Ugh, but you can't convert a college DE to NFL OLB according to some on this board...

Gibson was a LB in high school who grew into a rush end at Ohio State. Moving back to a rush OLB in a 3-4 system is natural for him.

Gholston was a DE in high school and a DE in college who dropped back into coverage from time to time. Expecting him to be comfortable in space at the NFL level was idiotic.

Comparing Thad to Gholston is also idiotic.
