Arizona's Scooby Wright III wins the 2014 Lombardi Award. Joey Bosa was a finalist.

Bosa's a better player, Scooby has a better name. Just shows you how people vote for these things.

Arizona defense gave up 27.5 points per game, 401.2 yards per game, ranked 102nd in total defense.

Ohio State defense gave up 21.2 points per game, 328 yards per game, ranked 15th in total defense.

What a joke!

I thought the same, but if you look at his stats they're pretty remarkable. And it's an individual award. While looking at team stats could play into it, individual stats are weighed more heavily. Look at theses stats:

Scooby:

27.0 TFL
14.0 sacks
89.0 solo and 64.0 assisted for total of 153.0 tackles
6 fumbles forced

Bosa:

20.0 TFL
13.5 sacks
34.0 solo and 16.0 assisted for total of 50.0 tackles
4 fumbles forced
1 fumble recovery for a td

I get that it's an individual award. But would you ever give Heisman to a quarterback whose offense averaged 17 points per game? Similar thing here. If Scooby is so great, then the other ten Arizona defenders must have REALLY sucked.

Also, when your defense can't get off the field, you're going to have more opportunity to pad your stats.

Finally, LBs will always have opportunity to make more plays than DL's.

RichRod, defensive genius, I guess.

No, I get your point. Just trying to point out that he was very deserving as well.

Edit: And the one stat that kind of swayed me was Scooby's sacks. Because you're right, most other stats are easier for a LB (obviously tackles but then also TFL I believe). But having 14 sacks is phenomenal from the LB position. If that was, say 6 sacks I would have thought Bosa was the choice.
