Humbled.
That's how Lake Taylor standout Jalyn Holmes said he felt after an incident that took place three weeks ago.
The Titans played Oscar Smith before a sold-out crowd and a nationally televised audience on ESPNU. But things didn't go well for Holmes - or the Titans.
Lake Taylor lost 42-2, and Holmes was ejected in the fourth quarter.
The unsportsmanlike conduct call - for stepping on an Oscar Smith player - cost the four-star recruit two games under Virginia High School League guidelines.
"That Saturday morning when I saw everything, I knew that wasn't me," said Holmes, a tight end and defensive lineman who returns from the suspension tonight when sixth-ranked Lake Taylor plays No. 9 Maury at Powhatan Field. "People who know me know that wasn't me."
Lake Taylor coach Hank Sawyer agreed.
"He's not like that," Sawyer said. "And it kind of hurt me to hear all the negative things that people said about him."
Holmes, who committed to Ohio State three months ago, wondered what the Buckeyes would say about the suspension. He got his answer the next day when Ohio State coach Urban Meyer called and told him not to worry.
"That really made it a lot easier to deal with," Holmes said. "And he told me that if I heard any rumors to not believe it because he had my back 100 percent."
